Willoughby South Storms Over University, 35-0

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – With severe weather looming in Northeast Ohio, the now 3-0 Willoughby South Rebels made quick work of the University Preppers on Friday night.

The Rebels rolled over the Preppers 35-0 in a game that only was played for about 15 minutes of game time. The game was called with 8:55 left in the second quarter due to weather at Harry E. Winters Stadium.

South got the ball first and they capped a 93 yard drive with a ten yard rushing touchdown from Ira Sampson as they led 7-0. University’s first drive ended as Vince D’Eusanio made the interception.

Deshod Reese made it 14-0 Rebels with a 12 yard touchdown run with 5:40 left in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Justin Grosel completed a 75 yard bubble screen to Danny Gallagher and the rout was on. South’s lead expanded to 21-0 with over four minutes left in the first quarter.

The fourth touchdown of the quarter came on a 30 yard pass from Grosel to Rico Small with 1:45 left in first.

On a South fourth down play in the second quarter, Sampson found a hold in the line and busted through for a 25 yard run. Willoughby South led 35-0 with 9:45 left in the first half.

Less than a minute later, the game was delayed due to lightning and was eventually ended with the final score of 35-0.

In less than two quarters, Willoughby South’s offense put up 263 total yards. Grosel was four-of-six with 138 yards passing and two touchdowns. Sampson added 78 rushing yards on 11 carries with two scores. Gallagher led the wideouts with three catches for 108 yards and a score.

Willoughby South passed the total wins from 2018 with three straight wins to open the season. They travel to Madison next week to open WRC play. University (1-2) will host John Hay  on Saturday.
