CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – Friday’s game between the Kenston Bombers and the West Geauga Wolverines was like most games in Northeast Ohio on Friday (Sept. 13). Mother Nature would not allow a full 48 minutes of football.

The Bombers and Wolverines got 25:13 of game time in before lightning was discovered AND the power went out at Bomber Stadium. Kenston was declared the 27-10 winner after the coaches and athletic directors met.

Kenston fumbled the ball on the first possession of the game as West Geauga’s Josh Moriarity recovered the Jack Porter fumble. After the Wolverines passed into Bombers territory, Riley Huge was picked off by Tyler Kestranek and the senior went 65 yards to the house. Kenston led 7-0 five minutes into the game.

After West Geauga punted on the next drive, Kenston scored in six plays as Jon Tomcufcik found Ja’Von Middleton on a 38 yard passing touchdown that Middleton caught on the run over his shoulder. The Bombers expanded the lead to 14-0 with one minute left in the first quarter.

The Wolverines scored the first points on Kenston this season as Joey Dilalla nailed a 39 yard field goal. West Geauga closed the gap to 14-3 ninety seconds into the second quarter. Kenston’s high-powered offense moved down the field on a ten play, 65 yard drive and added to the lead on a 19 yard touchdown pass from Tomcufcik to Porter. With under six minutes left before halftime, the Bombers led 20-3.

On the second play from scrimmage on the West G drive, Trae Zimmermann took a handoff 79 yards to paydirt. The Wolverines had a quick answer as they trailed 20-10 with 5:26 left before intermission.

The final 5:26 of the second quarter saw two interceptions, a fumble and a blocked kick. Tomcufcik fumbled the ball on Kenston’s next possession as Harrison Gruber pounced on the ball for West Geauga. Six plays later, Huge throws a pick that was caught by Logan Vargo for Kenston. With Kenston knocking on the door of the red zone, Tomcufcik is picked off at the goal line by Zimmermann. Zimmermann takes the ball 79 yards before being brought down by his shoelaces.

With eight seconds left, Dilalla attempted a 46 yard field goal. The kick was blocked and Middleton recovered it and ran 65 yards to the end zone. Kenston led 27-10 at halftime.

West Geauga ran two plays after halftime before the officials cleared the field due to weather. Moments later, the power went out and eventually the game was called final with 10:47 left in the third quarter.

Kenston outgained West Geauga 257-199 as Kenston had 186 yards through the air.
