What wrestling fan could possibly ever forget Stone Cold Steve Austin turning heel and joining the “Evil” Mr. McMahon at the close of WrestleMania X7?
It is a moment that will forever stand the test of time. But it wasn’t the only shocking or memorable “turn” in WrestleMania History. There have been several over the years and we break down the top five right here.
- WrestleMania X7: Austin turns heels to join Mr. McMahon
The aforementioned Austin turn to join McMahon may never be topped. We’re not sure how that could ever happen. Austin was the ultimate good guy and McMahon the ultimate bad guy. They had feuded heavily for the better part of three straight years.
They hated each other and Austin was in his own backyard. Yep, no one, and I mean no one saw this coming! McMahon helped Austin cheat to defeat The Rock and walk away WWE Champion for the Fifth time.
2. Macho Man gets attacked by Sensational Sherri then re-unites with Ms. Elizabeth
They were the first couple of the WWF and beloved by many. They were even married in real life. So when Ms. Elizabeth ran down to save the then “heel” Macho King, it was a feel good moment for everyone involved as savage once again heard the cheers from the crowd for the first time in years.
3. WrestleMania III: Brutus the Barber Beefcake cuts the hair of the Adorable One Adrian Adonis
For years he was jeered as a member of the Dream Team. That all changed on that fateful night in Pontiac as the gimmick of a soon to be hall of famer was born! Piper did Beefcake a GIGANTIC favor with that one!
4. WrestleMania VI: Andre The Giant retires as a good guy.
For nearly his entire career Andre The Giant was cheered and beloved by fans all over the world. It wasn’t until he sided with Bobby “The” Brain Heennan in the spring of 1987 that fans turned on him.
For three years the fans hated Andre and feared him. It wasn’t until the closing moments of his appearance with Haku at WrestleMania VI that Andre finally saw the light.
Sadly, this was the final time he would set foot in a ring to wrestle on the WWE as he retired soon after. Less then 3 years later, Andre passed away, leaving behind a legacy few will ever be able to top.
5. WrestleMania XX: Trish Stratus slaps Chris Jericho to side with Christian.
The short-lived romance between Chris Jericho and Trish Stratus ended abruptly at WrestleMania XX when she slapped Y2J several times. Making matters worse was she decided to swap some spit with Christian at the top of the ramp. Fans had loved Trish until then, and liked her just “a little less”, afterwards.
