Shaker Heights, Ohio – For the first time in over 100 years, Shaker Heights High School hosted a Friday night game at Russell H. Rupp Field.

For a team that usually plays on Saturday afternoons, it was a special occasion for not just the team, but the community as well.

The Red Raiders captured their first win of the season, 27-6, over visiting Garfield Heights in an LEL contest.

On the first possession, Adam Diaz found Ian Chevalier for a long completion to put the Raiders on the doorstep of the end zone.

But Garfield Heights would force a fumble, recovered by Ronald Johnson.

After a punt, Shaker Heights took advantage of a short field, and Diaz found Chevalier for a 20-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders ahead, 7-0.

He would find Chevalier once again for another score later in the quarter, to increase the lead to 14-0.

Later in the first half, Diaz would find Darnel Palmer for a 30-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 21-0.

In the third quarter, both offenses moved into the red zone, but neither could put any points on the board. Tommy Dunn also had an interception to halt a Garfield Heights drive early in the third.

Garfield Heights defensive lineman Bryce Young picked off a pass and took it into Shaker territory with less than four minutes left.

After a long completion put the Bulldogs at the one, senior running back Gavin Brooks punched it in to put the Bulldogs on the board.

The Red Raiders would recover the ensuing onside kick, and drive down the field, burning off precious time.

Senior quarterback Adam Diaz capped off his night with a 16-yard touchdown toss to brother Aiden with ten seconds left to cap the scoring.

The Shaker Heights student section stormed the field after the game to celebrate with the victorious Raiders.

Shaker Heights improves to 1-4, and they host Shaw next Saturday afternoon to continue Lake Erie League play.

Garfield Heights drops to 1-5 and they host Lorain next Friday night to continue Lake Erie League play.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
