Anthony Wayne Remains Undefeated with a Comeback Victory at St.John’s 10-7

Toledo, OH — St. John’s high school football hosted the reigning Northern Lakes League (NLL) Champions for Week 2. The Generals benefited off of a 23-yard field goal by Seth VonLehmden and a touchdown run by Joe Caswell to secure the lead. The Generals had a slow start, but their offensive and defensive lines took over in the 4th quarter.

In the last matchup between St. John’s and Anthony Wayne, the game came down to the last second. St. John’s completed a touchdown reception with no time left on the clock and shocked the Generals with a 22-20 finish.

QUARTER 1
For the first home opener of the season, the Titans came out with energy, putting up an 18-yard touchdown run by Aaron Lovett.

Anthony Wayne gained first possession but St. John’s defensive back Tre Green broke up a pass on fourth down. Just two plays later, Generals Carson Spradlin recovered a fumble by Titans Blake Lichtenberg and regained possession for the Generals. The Titans responded and quickly forced a punt.

Lichtenberg went on to complete 29 and 13 yard passes to Tommy Gallagher which led to a 18-yard touchdown run by Lovett. Titans up 7-0 at the end of the first.

QUARTER 2
Anthony Wayne put 3 on the board on a 23-yard field goal from Seth VonLehmden which resulted in the Generals trailing by 4. The Generals second possession was interrupted by Titans defensive back Justyn Toler broke up a pass in the endzone. Titans up 7-3 at the half.

QUARTER 3
Coming out of halftime, both offenses saw various penalties which resulted in a scoreless third quarter.

Anthony Wayne’s defense stepped up on St. John’s first drive, contributing sacks from defensive end Alex Zamora and defensive back Marco Morrison. The Titan’s quickly responded by forcing a punt and Anthony Wayne returned the favor.

General’s Carson Spradler, went on a 39-yard run on a second and long. This would close out the third.

QUARTER 4
Anthony Wayne put up their first touchdown of the night as the former NLL Player of the year, Joe Caswell, drove to the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown run.
The Generals built off of their energy and forced a turnover. Their offense drove down the field, but penalties brought the Generals back to field goal range, which resulted in a missed 38-yard field goal attempt.

St. John’s gained possession with 1:41 left. Anthony Wayne forced a turnover on the 47 to end the game.

Anthony Wayne’s Joe Caswell with 117 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.

The Generals will host Whitmer and St. John’s will be on the road at Perrysburg next week on Sep. 2.
