Walsh Jesuit defeats Hathaway Brown, 11-8, in Thursday night tilt

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – The Walsh Jesuit Warriors defeated the Hathaway Brown Blazers, 11-8, on Thursday evening.

Grace Cooney got things started with a goal at the 8:07 mark of the first quarter, putting Walsh Jesuit ahead, 1-0. Senior Eliza Taigen evened things up for Hathaway Brown with a tally 30 seconds later. Sophomore Gianna Debitetto gave the Warriors back the lead with a goal at the 4:31 mark. Georgia Nygaard responded for the Blazers to even things up at two.

Debitetto added her second goal with 18 seconds left, followed by a Caroline Morgan goal for Hathaway Brown 11 seconds later. After winning the draw, Debitetto almost had her third of the quarter, but it came after the horn sounded.

She would come up with her third goal just over a minute into the second quarter, putting Walsh Jesuit in front, 4-3. Once again, the Blazers responded as sophomore Coco Taigen evened it up with 9:39 left.  The two teams traded goals one more time in the stanza, as Debitetto scored her fourth with 8:22 left, and junior Presley Napolitano her first 50 seconds later.

Debitetto found the back of the net for the fifth time in the half with 4:49 left, giving Walsh Jesuit a 6-5 lead. Camden Miller added another tally with 32 seconds left to increase the lead to 7-5 at the half.

Junior Grace Cooney scored her second goal of the game with 9:44 left, bumping the Warrior lead to 8-5. Coco Taigen responded with her second to cut the Blazer deficit to 8-6. Cooney added her third tally with 3:04 left in the third quarter. Walsh Jesuit led 9-6 after the three.

Presley Napolitano scored for the second time with 8:57 left, cutting the Warrior lead to 9-7. But that was as close as Hathaway Brown got the rest of the way. Grace Cooney and Gianna Debitetto each scored, increasing the Warrior margin to 11-7. Napolitano scored once more for the final margin.

Sophomore Gianna Debitetto finished with six goals in total for the Warriors, five of them coming in the first half. Junior and Mercyhurst commit Grace Cooney added four, and junior Camden Miller added the other.

Junior Presley Napolitano had three goals for the Blazers. Sophomore Coco Taigen added a pair, and Eliza Taigen, Caroline Morgan, and Georgia Nygaard each tallied a goal apiece.

The Warriors’ next match is at Gilmour Academy on Saturday, April 11th. The Blazers are back in action the same day at North Canton Hoover.
