Mayfield Wildcats Defeat Elyria Catholic Panthers 31-13 to Improve to 2-0

The Mayfield Wildcats continued their impressive start to the season with a 31-13 victory over the Elyria Catholic Panthers. It was a dominant defensive effort for the Wildcats, as they held the Panthers offense out of the end zone.

After a slow start, Wildcats RB Brody Colello got the scoring started with a 13-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Colello kept it going on the next Wildcats drive. This time, he broke free for a 73-yard score to make it 14-0. Colello finished the night with 186 rushing yards on 17 carries.

The Panthers got the big play they needed when Donovan Shumpert intercepted Wildcats QB Dario D’Agostino and returned it 68-yards for a touchdown. However, D’Agostino rebounded immediately by throwing a 27-yard touchdown to Ryan Eppich. That gave Mayfield a 20-7 lead going into halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Donovan Shumpert came through again for Elyria Catholic. He intercepted D’Agostino for the second time and took it all the way back for another pick six. That cut the deficit to 20-13. Mayfield then put together a strong, bounce back drive that was capped off by another D’Agostino touchdown pass to Ryan Eppich.

Eppich was the Wildcats leading receiver with 3 catches for 75 yards. Leading 26-13, the Wildcats added 2 more points with a safety after an errant snap on a Panthers punt attempt went out the back of the end zone. A late 25-yard field goal by Grady Spetz made it 31-13.
