by VERO BEACH, FL – A previously unbeaten Fort Pierce Central team came in 4-0, but Vero Beach had other plans, grinding out a 10-7 win in a game that was as much about penalty flags as it was about football, with more than 20 called on the night.
Vero Beach leaned on the ground game from the jump, and Jayden Lockhart had the majority, carrying it 24 times for 122 yards. Lockhart punched in a 2-yard touchdown to open the scoring and give the Fighting Indians a 7-0 lead.
Fort Pierce Central answered with one of the plays of the season, as Drew LaPlante threw what looked like a screen pass to Kevin Dixon, Dixon then turns and throws a second pass downfield to a wide open Chad Devries for a 69-yard touchdown that tied the game at 7-7. LaPlante was efficient all night, finishing 18-of-23 for 135 yards, and the Cobras’ running back stayed involved as a receiver out of the backfield, hauling in nine catches for 66 yards to go with 14 yards on seven carries.
The game turned into a defensive struggle from there, and it was Vero Beach that came up with the answer. Snyder Arbelaez drilled a 31-yard field goal to put the Fighting Indians back on top 10-7, and that lead would hold up as the final.
Vero Beach’s quarterback Makai White didn’t have to do much, but he made the most of his opportunities, going a perfect 5-of-5 for 50 yards through the air. The real story down the stretch was the Vero Beach defensive line, led by Josiah Taylor, who terrorized the Cobras backfield all night for four sacks, two of which came on Central’s final drive of the game, shutting down any hope of a comeback and sealing the win for the Fighting Indians.
Player of the Game: Jayden Lockhart
Jayden Lockhart was the engine that made this upset possible. He carried the load all night, picking up 122 yards on 24 carries and punching in the game’s opening touchdown, keeping Vero Beach’s offense on schedule and controlling the clock against a Central defense that had no answer for him. On a night defined by penalties and a defensive slugfest, Lockhart’s steady, physical running was the one constant Vero Beach could count on, and it set the tone for the win from start to finish.
