by It was an action packed wild main card at UFC Oklahoma City tonight. The card was main evented by Kamaru Usman vs DDP in a battle of Former World Champions. The card saw plenty of wins by Americans as well and kept the crowd engaged and excited. Let’s get right to the Hot Takes,
Tommy McMillan puts on a show in KO victory over Alberto Montes.
The fight went nearly the distance before McMillan finally put Montes out at 3:29 of the third round. McMillan was incredible, landing a record 500 plus strikes in a Featherweight fight. The win improves him to 11-0 and he looks to be the real deal. McMillan applied constant pressure in the win and Montes displayed a excellent chin before finally going out late in the third as no man alive could take that much pressure and not fold. What an amazing fight!
Fatima Kline fights above ranking to prove dominant ground game
This one was simple, Kline was 8 of out 8 in her takedown attempts while Tabathia Ricci was only 1 out of 8. Kline spent nearly 5 minutes in ground control while Ricci couldn’t sniff a minute of control. Kline nearly tapped her out to end the second but Ricci was saved by the bell. The fact that Kline was ranked 14th while Ricci was 7th coming into this makes me scratch my head. Kline improves to 10-1 and now 4-1 in her UFC career with 4 straight wins, she will be headed towards an opponent in the Top 5 of the UFC Strawweight Division next.
Chase Hooper gets back on the winning track
After two straight losses, Hooper wasn’t messing around in this one and it only took him 2:15 of the very first round to defeat Mitch Ramirez by rear naked choke. The fight was never even close as Hooper dominated horn to horn. Hooper is now 9-5 in his UFC career with a long way to go before any title contention, but a win is a win.
Christian ( CLD ) Duncan defeats Jared Cannonier in evenly paced no thrills match
Duncan just won his fifth straight UFC fight, with 3 of them by non glamourous decision. He gets the job done but his fights continue to leave me wanting. He keeps trying for those spinning back fist knockouts, and too his credit he has 4 of them in his career. Against a veteran like Cannonier however, he needed something extra and didn’t have it tonight, settling for the non flashy decision.
Dricus de Plessis needs a title shot after UD win over Kamaru Usman.
First off, Usman may have lost 50-45 on one score card, but two of the judges had it a bit closer at 49-46. I had it at 48-47 for DDP as well. Usman fought his heart out after getting beaten badly in the first and second to make it a compelling fight. However, DDP looked the best he ever has and considering he already has two wins over current UFC Middleweight Champion Sean Strickland, I think if he fights him again he wins for a third time. The only question left is if the champ accepts or is obligated to rematch Khazmat Chimaev first?
