Medina, OH–Broken scoreboards and pouring rain couldn’t stop the Rocky River Pirates, who showed up tonight to dominate the Buckeye Bucks on their home turf 35-9 and keeping the pressure on all night long, despite the torrential northeast Ohio downpour!
The Pirates stormed out of the gates ready to play tonight! Despite the rain, they came out swinging and scored just 38 seconds after the kickoff on the second play of the evening! Carter Atwater’s pass attempt was tipped by the Buckeye defense, bobbled, and almost dropped only to be recovered by star running back Tristin Hughes and good for a 74 yard touchdown, as the Pirates drew first blood.
They kept their feet on the gas through the first quarter, suffocating the Bucks’ offense and scoring their second touchdown of the night, with just over a minute to go in the opening quarter. The Pirates found themselves getting a first down on the one yard line, after failing to break the Bucks’ near impenetrable D-Line, Hughes found the gap and shot through, good for a one yard carry and touchdown, as the Pirates went up 14-0.
Completing the first half shutout of the Bucks, the Pirates’ third touchdown of the night came halfway through the second quarter by yet again, Tristin Hughes! Hughes had no problem cutting through the Bucks’ defense, running the ball 50 yards down the field and right into the endzone, as the Pirates went up 21-0 headed into halftime.
The Pirates kept their feet on the gas coming out of the break, scoring on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter after Carter Atwater launched a missile to Danny Berg, good for a 47 yard reception and touchdown, bringing the score to 28-0 in favor of the Pirates.
The Bucks finally came to life on the very next drive, however. After a strong drive down the field, Shane Metter found Rees Perkins in the endzone and delivered a 5 yard pass on a silver platter, avoiding the shutout and scoring their first touchdown of the night.
But the Bucks’ momentum was short lived, as the kickoff to the Pirates was caught and pitched back to Tristin Hughes who blasted off down the field for a 75 yard kick return and touchdown, getting the Pirates’ last points of the night and jumping out to a 35-7 lead.
The rest of the game was fairly uneventful, but after a high snap and safety on the Pirates, the Bucks tacked on two more points to their total for the last points of the night, as the game ended 35-9.
The player of the game for the Rocky River Pirates was far and away running back Tristin Hughes. Hughes rushed for 203 yards and was the catalyst for four of the Pirates’ five touchdowns.
Quarterback Carter Atwater had a good night as well, completing four of his nine passes for a total of 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
For the Bucks, their player of the game was running back Liam Phillips who carried the ball 24 times, good for 122 yards.
Buck Quarterback Shane Metter had a good night too, completing nine of his eleven passes for a total of 81 yards, with a five yard touchdown in the mix as well.
The Bucks’ record falls to 4-5 on the season and will take on the Westlake Demons next week for the last game of the regular season.
The Pirates continued their hot streak this year, remaining undefeated and sitting atop their conference at 9-0 for the season.
