This game played today in the quarterfinals of the MAC Women’s basketball tournament at Rocket Mortgage Field House in Cleveland will lead you to think of many cliches.

Survive and advance!

It’s March Madness baby!

Go big or go home!

The Lady Rockets took everything and then some from the Lady Bulls from Buffalo to survive and advance to play on Friday morning against Kent State. Toledo head coach Tricia Cullop stated after the game,”We knew we were going to their best game. They did not give up and neither did our team. I am very proud of my team even though they caused me several heart attacks.”

This game was one for the ages and just adds to this amazing rivalry. The game featured 21 lead changes and 13 ties. Buffalo was led by their 5th year senior guard Zakiyah Winfield who finished with a game high 22 points and 7 rebounds. Toledo was led by their senior guard Quinesha Lockett who finished with 19 points and 7 assists.

Buffalo was able to surprise Toledo in the first quarter with their offensive efficiency and defensive prowess to take an 18-15 lead after the first period. The second quarter featured haymaker after haymaker and each team answered the other teams baskets with one of their own bringing the half time score to Buffalo 42 Toledo 40.

For as much as the second quarter was an offensive juggernaut the third quarter was a chance for both teams to show their defensive capabilities. It was a struggle for both teams and the scoreboard showed a 3 point advantage for Buffalo 54-51 going into the final quarter of regulation time.

The fourth quarter was another tit for tat scenario with each team trading baskets back and forth and the tension grew in the arena. Buffalo was able to show the sparse crowd at the Field House that they were here and trying to pull off the upset and not going away easily. The score was tied at 68 at the end of regulation.

The deciding points were scored by Rocket guard Jayda Jansen who drove to the basket and was fouled and she made her way to the charity stripe. Jansen calmly hit both free throws and gave the Lady Rockets a one point lead. On the next Buffalo possession star guard Zakiyah Winfield drove hard to the basket but she was tied up by Rocket defender Lockett which caused a jump ball. Buffalo maintained possession but with only .5 seconds remaining a long heave did not find the hoop and Toledo survived.

Final Score Toledo 75 Buffalo 74
