MAC Football Kickoff 2022 Takeaways

College football is back! Well almost, in 32 days the 2022 college football season will begin and today the Mid American Conference held their 2022 kickoff event at the House of Blues in downtown Cleveland. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the event, and what MAC fans can expect from this 2022 season.

MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher had his opening press conference for the 2022 season. As a college football fan I have been worried about the realignment of these bigger schools joining the BIG 10 and the SEC. I have been worried about what this means for the smaller conferences like the MAC that do not have the power to compete with the two powerhouse conferences. The commissioner addressed it and said the schools have addressed the situation and that any realignment in the MAC makes no sense.

As a fan of the MAC this makes me happy to hear this because the last thing I want is to lose a school to another conference. I am worried about the future of college football. Are we heading to a two conference powerhouse? That does not sound exactly exciting for me.

Steinbrecher went on to say that he is hopeful as well for an expansion of the College Football Playoff. Instead of having 10-15 teams competing at the end of the year he would like it to be close to 30 teams being able to compete for spots if it is expanded to 12 or 16 teams.

I would like the CFP to be expanded because it is always the same teams in contention every year. I think adding more teams goes to the commissioners point of having more teams be in contention late into the season. Will we ever see a MAC team make the CFP? That is something I am not so sure about. Steinbrecher even mentioned back in March that it would take multiple undefeated seasons in a row to see this happen. I am hopeful that it will but it is something that I am not betting on.

Then lastly I was able to speak to Kent State’s head coach Sean Lewis. I asked him about the void at quarterback after Kent lost Dustin Crum to the NFL. Coach Lewis said that the team’s goals are the same as they always have been regardless of losing Crum. A goal of this season is to win not only the wagon wheel but to win the whole league, which would be the first time the school has won the MAC since 1972.

As a KSU student I am worried entering the season, a transition of quarterback is not an easy thing to handle, but I believe in the fifth year coach that the transition will be seamless and can’t wait for not only the Kent State season but the MAC as a whole.
