PARMA, OH – Lake Catholic got off to a strong start and never really gave it up, defeating the Padua Bruins 15-8 in a girls lacrosse matchup, where they maintained control throughout the entire night.
Right from the opening quarter, the Cougars came out aggressively. They built a 5-2 lead early, setting the tone with fast offense and consistent pressure. It was not perfect, but they were clearly the team directing how the rest of the game would play out.
In the second quarter, both teams found some rhythm offensively. Lake Catholic was able to extend its lead to 9-4 heading into halftime. Padua showed some signs of life, keeping the game within reach and not completely letting it slip away. They would just have to play better defense in the second half to stand a chance.
Coming out of halftime, the Cougars stayed in front. Padua played really good defense in the third quarter, but the Cougars were playing just as good, if not better, defense. There were just three total goals scored in the quarter, with the Cougars heading into the fourth with an 11-5 lead.
By the fourth quarter, Lake Catholic was able to put the game away, finishing with 15 goals and keeping a comfortable lead down the stretch. The game ended with a 15-8 Cougars win.
There were times it felt like Padua might make a run, but Lake Catholic always had a response. Whether it was a quick goal or an impressive stop by the goalie, the Cougars answered with a goal or a stop of their own.
Offensively, multiple players stepped up for Lake Catholic. #20 Maddie Gibbons led the way with five goals throughout the game, making it very hard for the Bruins to stop her. She was tonight’s player of the game. #4 Liliana Doolan also had a big impact, adding four goals and helping keep the offense moving.
#5 Claire Gibbons and #11 Maddie Cox both had two goals during the game, finding the net at key moments. #1 Anna Peterlin and #2 Aubrey Speelman also helped with the scoring, each having a goal of their own, rounding out a balanced offensive performance by the Cougars.
Padua also had good moments. #25 Isabella Geffert had three goals, never giving up throughout the entire game, and thought there was always a chance to win. #11 Smilla Cohagan and #19 Mariana Bryan had two goals each. Finally, #1 Nora Kenny had a goal. There were flashes of great offensive moments during the game, but the Cougars just outplayed the Bruins.
Overall, it was a great performance from the Cougars. They stayed consistent, kept control, and made key plays when it mattered most. The Cougars will be heading into their next game with a lot of momentum.
