The Cinderella story for the Holland Springfield Lady Devils continued tonight in a huge upset over the heavily favored Magnificat Blue Streaks. The Lady Devils are coming off a huge upset over state ranked Toledo Start and beat them in every phase of the game.
It was very clear early on that both of these teams live and die with their defense and both defenses shined tonight. The first quarter saw 3 made field goals, 2 made free throws and a combined 11 turnovers. The score was Lady Devils 6 Blue Streaks 3 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was much of the same as neither team was able to figure out their opponent’s defense. The second quarter featured only 3 made field goals and 2 made free throws and 8 turnovers. The score at the half was Lady Devils 10 Blue Streaks 7. I am here to tell you that is not a typo or a football score.
The third quarter was sort of an offensive explosion for both teams and it seemed both teams solved some of their opponents’ defensive mistakes. The Blue Streaks were spurred on by two dagger 3-point shots by forward Brynn Roggenburk. She was able to hit those shots immediately after Lady Devil baskets. The score after 3 periods was Lady Devils 22 Blue Streaks 17.
The final quarter was much of the same and the Blue Streaks were never able to get any offensive flow. Lady Devils forward Gretchen Sigman was clutch down the stretch by making 4 out of 5 free throws to seal the upset victory. Final Score Lady Devils 34 Blue Steaks 30.
The Lady Devils move on to play Olmsted Falls on Saturday afternoon at 1pm back here in Sandusky. The winner of that game moves on to the final four in Division 1 in Dayton.
