It is the much anticipated week. Akron vs Kent State is happening this Saturday. While both teams are off to a disappointing start, both teams’ seasons are made for this week. Beat your rival and all is forgiven. The name of the game is the Wagon Wheel. This storied rivalry needs a look back. And how did the game get that name?

This rivalry between the two schools goes back all the way to the 1923 season, it was the first time these two schools played each other in football. And it was a dominant 32-0 win for the Akron Zips over the Golden Flashes. The first six matchups against these schools were all played in Akron, Ohio. The first time being played at Kent State was the 1933 matchup with Akron winning by a final of 19-6. Kent State’s record against Akron in the rivalry for the first 12 matchups was 0-11-1. With a 0-0 tie coming in the 1932 matchup.

But starting in 1942 after the slow starts for Kent State against Akron, Kent State would go on to win the next nine meetings between the schools, including a 47-0 shutout over the Zips in 1949.

The first time the game was played with the Wagon Wheel name was not until 1946. It was a horse-drawn wagon that was painted with both of the school’s colors. It was named after World War II had ended, and the game between the two schools was played for the first time since 1942.

Akron did not join the MAC until 1992, so before that this game was not played every year, it was actually played periodically up until then. But since Akron joined the MAC the game has been played every year. Including the odd 2020 season where Kent State only played four games, and Akron only playing six that season. The 2020 matchup ended with a 69-35 win for the Golden Flashes at an empty DIX stadium.

The last three matchups between the schools have ended with a Kent State victory, including last season which saw Kent State beat Akron by a final of 38-0. Akron leads the all time series 35-27-2. The two ties came in 1932 and 1972 respectively.

The importance of this game is all about bragging rights over your rival. Kent State and Akron are approximately 10 miles apart. Kent State has not gotten off to the type of start they wanted this season, a slow 2-5 start, which includes last week’s lose to Toledo after Kent State was up 21-0, but if Kent State wins this can be the type of thing that can turn this season around, and get them to a bowl game.

On the Akron side, they 1-6 start and 0-3 start for the MAC, and a win on the road against the Golden Flashes can spoil their rivals season, and start to show the improvement of the program.
