Sixth Woman of the Year
Gemma Wichmann of Magnificat
For years this award was dominated by Olmsted Falls with players such as Sara Glover, Mia Kalich and Danielle Cameron who all made huge contributions off the bench in their freshman and sophomore years. This time, it was Gemma Wichmann who could have easily started on any other team in the state, she just happens to play for one of the very best at Magnificat.
Gemma is a joy to watch, she is dominant in the paint and has proven she can hit an outside shot when called upon as well. She is a master at offensive rebounding as every rebound is just another opportunity turned into points.
Also, she is athletic as all get out! I mean, when you look at her you would think about a typical power forward back in the day, like a Charles Barkley or Dennis Rodman, but then she starts moving and has the agility of a point guard. She is strong and fast, a deadly combination. She reminds me of Abby Carrington of Westlake a few years back, again, just so darn athletic and talented all at once.
Perhaps best of all, she is a humble kid who just likes to play sports! Nothing but good days ahead for Gemma. I spoke with coach Danny Gallagher who had this to share about Wichmann, “Gemma is a young player who plays way beyond her age. She is a model of our values and in all circumstances puts the team in front of herself! She is hitting her stride at a great time and the sky is the limit for her! I am very excited to see what she will do down the stretch and then over the next couple of years!”
All I can say about Gemma is what a gift it is that she is only a sophomore, we get two more years to watch her play after this. Expect to see the name, “Gemma Wichmann” a lot over the next two seasons at Kee On Sports.
