Hathaway Brown advances to state final four with 8-6 win over Hawken

Shaker Heights, Ohio – Hathaway Brown captured its fourth consecutive regional title with an 8-6 victory over the Hawken Hawks Friday evening at Wolf Field.

Hathaway Brown got things started early on with a goal from Presley Napolitano to take a 1-0 lead. Hawken evened things up with a goal from sophomore Emma Russell.  They would take the lead 30 seconds later when Brooke Henkel found the back of the net.

Hawken would lead 3-1 after one, adding to their margin thanks to a goal from junior Caroline Briggs. Thanks to a strong defense, they would keep their margin through the majority of the second quarter as well.

But the Blazers cut their deficit in half, thanks to a goal from Eliza Taigen with 3:05 remaining in the second quarter. Coco Taigen would even things up with a goal of her own with 11 seconds left in the half.

They took the lead for the second time Friday evening when Presley Napolitano scored less than a minute into the third quarter. Hawken equalized when Caroline Briggs scored at the 9:33 mark of the third quarter. She added her third tally of the game to give the Hawks the lead at 6-5.

Eliza Taigen provided an answer for Hathaway Brown, scoring with 1:32 left in the third quarter to even things up at 6 at the end of three.

Early in the fourth quarter, Briggs scored for the fourth time, to give Hawken a 7-6 lead with 11:22 remaining.

The Blazers answered back, getting a goal from Faith Faremouth with 7:12 left to even the score. Junior Caroline Morgan gave Hathaway Brown a 7-6 lead with 4:06 remaining. With the lead, the Blazers played keepaway, intending to milk as much clock as possible. They would add an insurance goal with 1:42 remaining as Eliza Taigen found the back of the net for an 8-6 lead.

The Blazers advanced to the Division II state semifinals where they’ll be taking on Bay. The Rockets defeated Rocky River, 19-8, in the Region 5 championship. That matchup is set for Wednesday evening at Green Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, June 4th.
