Avon’s Perfect Season Stays Alive with a 63-28 Win Over Amherst Steele

Amherst, OH – The Amherst Steele Comets hosted the Avon Eagles at Mercy Health Stadium in a week nine matchup. The Comets came into the game looking to bounce back after a close loss last week against the Elyria Pioneers. The Avon Eagles came into the game looking to keep their season perfect, following a 45-7 win against the Midview Middies. The Avon Eagles could not be stopped with a final score of 63-28. The Avon Eagles were led by junior quarterback Nolan Good, sophomore running back, Cam Wendell, junior running back Nick Colburn and sophomore wide receiver Grant Barr. 

After a defensive struggle to begin the game it was the Amherst Steele Comets who struck first. The Comets capitalized on a fumble by the Eagles that was recovered by senior defensive back Jacob Kraft, which put the Comets into the Eagles territory. A costly 13-yard defensive pass interference penalty on the Eagles moved the Comets downfield even more. Junior quarterback Cole Norris made an impressive throw to senior wide receiver Jonathan Williams for an 11-yard touchdown. Junior kicker Maddie Gates came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 7-0 with 5:07 left in the 1st quarter. 

The Eagles did not let the Comets quick start stop them. Junior quarterback Nolan Good threw an 8-yard completion to junior wide receiver Matt Maxey. Good carried the ball 5 yards to secure the 1st down for the Eagles. Good threw another 8-yard completion to Maxey to move the Eagles downfield. Good handed the ball off to sophomore running back Cam Wendell who carried the ball 6 yards, securing the 1st down for the Eagles. Good handed the ball off to Maxey who carried the ball 7 yards, moving the Eagles closer to the endzone. A costly 5-yard offsides penalty on the Comets and a 17 yard run by junior running back Nick Colburn put the Eagles at 1st and goal. Good handed the ball off to Colburn who raced into the endzone for a 2-yard rushing touchdown. Junior kicker Owen Warrick came on and scored the extra point, making the score 7-7 with 11:44 left in the half. 

The Eagles forced the Comets to punt on their next drive. The Eagles recovered a fumbled snap on the Comets 25-yard line to start off the drive. Good threw a perfect pass to a wide-open junior tight end Ty Beerbohm for a 25-yard touchdown. Warrick came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 14-7 with 10:13 left in the half. 

The Amherst Steele Comets battled right back to tie the game. Following a 5-yard offsides penalty on the Eagles, Norris threw a 7-yard completion to senior offensive linemen Ross Auvil to secure the 1st down. Norris threw a 17-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver David Dudziak to secure another 1st down. Norris kept the ball and ran past the Eagles defense for a 10-yard gain to pick up another 1st down. A costly 10-yard holding penalty on the Comets moved them back. Despite the penalty, Norris threw a perfect pass to Kraft for a 19-yard completion and another 1st down, putting the Comets into the RedZone. Norris found a wide open junior wide receiver Tristyn Young in the endzone and threw a 3-yard touchdown completion. Gates came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 14-14 with 5:41 left in the half. 

The Eagles offense took the field and took back the lead. Good threw a 14-yard completion to Colburn to secure the 1st down. Good threw a deep pass to a wide-open Maxey for a 49-yard touchdown. Warrick came on and kicked the extra point, putting the score at 21-14 with 4:57 left in the half. 

After forcing the Comets to turnover on downs, the Eagles added onto their lead. Good threw an 8-yard completion to Maxey to start off the drive. Good handed the ball off to Wendell who carried for 3-yards, securing the 1st down. Despite pressure from the Comets defense, Good threw a 13-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver Grant Barr to give the Eagles another 1st down. Good handed the ball off to Wendell who weaved through the defense and into the endzone for a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Warrick came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 28-14 with 1:53 left in the half. 

With seconds left, the Comets were able to make their way into the endzone once again. Norris handed the ball off to senior tight end Mason Fisher who carried the ball for 10 yards. Norris threw an impressive 26-yard pass to junior wide receiver Eli Solak to put the Comets into the RedZone. With seconds left, Norris threw a 16-yard touchdown completion to sophomore wide receiver Tyler Denn who was wide open in the endzone. Gates came on and continued her perfect night scoring the extra point, putting the score at 28-21 with 34 seconds left in the half. 

The Eagles were able to add to their lead despite the clock running out of time. Good carried the ball for 8 yards to start off the drive. Good threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Barr. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the Eagles extra point attempt back 15 yards but that was no problem for Warrick. He came on and secured the extra point, putting the score at 35-21 to close out the half. 

The Eagles started off the second half with a bang and didn’t look back. Good handed the ball off to Colburn who rushed for 17 yards to secure the 1st down for the Eagles. Good handed the ball off to Wendell who carried the ball for another 8 yards. A 15-yard facemask penalty on the Comets moved the Eagles closer to the endzone. Good kept the ball and weaved through the defense, and into the endzone for a 17-yard rushing touchdown. Warrick came on and secured the extra point, putting the score at 42-21 with 9:53 left in the 3rd quarter. 

The Eagles were able to capitalize on an interception by senior defensive back Connor Rowlison. Good found a wide-open Grant Barr and threw an 82-yard touchdown pass. Warrick came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 49-21 with 8:25 left in the 3rd quarter. 

The Eagles defense continued to build on their momentum with another interception. Senior linebacker Cole Paonessa intercepted Cole Norris, putting the Eagles back into the RedZone. Good handed the ball off to Wendell who scored a 7-yard touchdown. Warrick continued his perfect night, scoring the extra point, making the score 56-21 with 7:30 left in the 3rd quarter. 

After forcing the Comets to turnover on downs, the Eagles added to their monstrous lead. Good threw a 9-yard completion to Barr to start off the drive. Back-to-back penalties on the Eagles moved them further away from the endzone. Good carried the ball for 9 yards and an offsides penalty on the Comets moved the Eagles downfield. Good handed the ball off to Colburn who ran the ball into the endzone for an 8-yard rushing touchdown. Sophomore kicker, Jensen Petro came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 63-21 with 10:23 left to play. 

Despite the Eagles lead, the Comets weren’t done yet. Norris carried the ball for 25-yards to start off the drive. A 15-yard penalty on the Eagles aided the Comets in moving downfield. Norris threw a 19-yard completion to Tristyn Young who made an impressive catch to put the Comets at 1st and goal. Norris held onto the ball and ran into the endzone for a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Maddie Gates came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 63-28 with 4:40 left in the game. 

This week’s player of the game was junior quarterback Nolan Good. His final stat line was 16 completions on 27 passing attempts for 320 passing yards. He had 4 passing touchdowns and 1 interception. An honorable mention to sophomore wide receiver Grant Barr, who boasted a stat line of 5 receptions for 173 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns. 

Next week, the Avon Eagles look to finish their perfect season as they host the Avon Lake Shoremen for a rivalry game. The Amherst Comets look to bounce back as they travel to North Ridgeville to play the Rangers to finish the regular season.
