Amherst Steele Comets Use Dominant Ground Game To Beat North Olmsted Eagles, 41-13

The Amherst Comets traveled to North Olmsted to take on the Eagles at Drive Morris Stadium on Friday night. The Comets came in looking to get off to a strong 2-1 start. On the other end of the spectrum, the Eagles were looking for their first win.

On the opening drive of the game, Ashton Draga made a big play for the Comets. He intercepted Eagles quarterback Tommy Horsfall. The Comets then drove methodically down the field. They scored the game’s first touchdown on a 10-yard run by Oliver Fekete. The Comets would go up 14-0 after Cole Norris scored on a 4-yard rush on the final play of the first quarter. Unfortunately, the Eagles lost starting running back and linebacker Logan Dangerfield to injury on that play. Comets quarterback Cole Norris and senior receiver Jonathan Williams formed a great connection in the first quarter. The duo connected on four passes for 40 yards.

On the next Eagles drive, Matthew Chalkwater filled in for the injured Dangerfield. He put the Eagles on the board with a 5-yard rushing touchdown. The Comets responded almost immediately when Cole Norris found Eli Solak deep for a 42-yard touchdown. The Comets regained their two-score lead and went up 21-7. However, the Comets were not done. A 9-yard touchdown run from Cole Norris pushed the advantage to 28-7. After a 25-yard run from Matthew Chalkwater, the Eagles had a prime chance to score right before halftime. However, a series of untimely penalties and a botched snap led to a turnover on downs.

The Eagles defense finally forced the Comets to punt on the first drive of the third quarter. However, they muffed the punt and gave the ball right back to the Comets. A sack on third down from Michael Passafiume would force a Comets field goal attempt, which missed. However, the Comets would come right back and score on their next drive on a 16-yard rushing score from J.R. Bires. The Comets would add 3 more on a Nathan Stewart field to go up 38-7 early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles would have their biggest play of the game when Brady Haug took a short pass from Tommy Horsfall 73 yards for a touchdown.

After a Maddie Gates field goal, the Comets would go on to win over the Eagles, 41-13. The Comets improve to 2-1 on the young season. The Eagles continue to look for their first win as they drop to 0-3. The Comets used a dominant ground game to get this victory, rushing for 290 yards in the game.
