It was a tightly contested matchup at Avon Lake High School on Friday night, where the Avon Lake Shoregals battled the Archbishop Hoban Knights in a game that remained in doubt until the final minutes. In the end, Hoban secured a 52–44 victory, pulling away late after a hard-fought four quarters.
Defense proved to be the defining factor. The Knights established their identity early with relentless on-ball pressure and disciplined help defense, disrupting Avon Lake’s offensive rhythm from the opening possession. The Shoregals struggled to initiate sets cleanly, even committing two five-second inbound violations before either team found the scoreboard. That early defensive tone forced Avon Lake into difficult half-court situations and limited transition opportunities throughout the night.
Despite the early miscues, the Shoregals responded with resilience. Forward Molly Milligan (50) delivered a strong individual performance, leading Avon Lake with 14 points. She was particularly effective in traffic, converting contested shots in the paint and setting a physical tone inside. Milligan also contributed at the free-throw line, accounting for four points at the stripe, including key conversions to open and close the scoring for her team.
Guard Olivia Miller (21) added 12 points and made her presence felt beyond the box score. Active defensively, Miller applied consistent ball pressure, generated turnovers, and provided energy that helped Avon Lake remain within striking distance deep into the fourth quarter.
For Hoban, guard Niera Stevens (22) paced the offense with 15 points. Stevens displayed exceptional ball-handling ability, navigating pressure with poise and creating scoring opportunities both for herself and her teammates. Her control in late-game situations helped the Knights maintain separation and ultimately secure the win in a competitive road environment.
With the loss, Avon Lake concludes the regular season at an impressive 15–7 overall. The Shoregals now turn their attention to postseason play, carrying momentum from a season defined by growth, toughness, and balanced scoring. As they enter the playoffs, Avon Lake will look to build on its defensive intensity and interior strength, aiming to translate regular-season success into a deep tournament run.

Great game by two very well coached teams, Avon Lake and Hoban will be hard outs in the tournament. Good luck to both coaches and players! I was surprised to see Mac there the Berea coach… I mean old coach I heard he got fired or had to resign either way I didn’t hear about until a AL parent told me last night…. That’s a plus for the Berea kids if that’s the case good guy but full of caca!
