2022 – 2023 SWC Defensive MVP Mia Kalich of Olmsted Falls
Even Michael Jordan needed Scottie Pippen and that is the greatest compliment I can give Mia Kalich. If there was ever a Scottie Pippen of SWC Girls basketball, it is Mia! She had the skillset and passion of Scottie Pippen and the fundamentals of Tim Duncan. Pretty high praise for this young lady who deserves every single ounce of it!
Kalich is the ultimate teammate and in an age where true centers no longer seem to exist, she was dominant down low. She fought for every ball, and made an effort to block every shot. Kalich was a superstar as a freshman, and just got better each and every year. She is a leader, a warrior and a champion.
Congrats Mia, it has been our honor to cover everything you have done for 4 years. KOS is proud of you, and believes in you!
I’ve brought up this memory before, and I will do it one more time. Flashback to the Covid Season of 2021, Olmsted Falls had Paige Kohler, Lauren Galaska, Allison Milligan and Grace Simon, but when they had to play Grace Van Slooten and Toledo, in the Elite 8, it was Mia Kalich who kept the Bulldogs in that game for as long as they were. She is the ultimate gamer!
As for Van Slooten, she is fresh off being named PAC Freshman player of the Week at Oregon. It just goes to show how spot on and good Kalich was that day to hang with her.
2022 – 2023 SWC Defensive MVP Mary Meng of Midview
When the talent is this good, you have two MVP’s on defense! Meng is the type of player that teams literally have to gameplan around. She was the Shaquille O’Neal of the SWC. Players knew there was no driving the lane when it came to Meng. She was not only defense; however, she could rebound on both ends of the court and score! Meng surpassed 1,500 career points as well, and is the type of talent that if she is continued to be coached properly in college and beyond, and continues to grow past high school, could have a lifelong career in hoops.
