The number 23 team in the country, Pitt started off with the ball on the road in Kalamazoo. Third string QB Nate Yarnell got the start tonight with Nick Patti not making the trip and Kedon Slovis sitting the bench.

The Panthers started off run heavy, Israel Abanikanda getting the majority of carries in the first half. The offense showed in the first possession that they had no intention on throwing the ball. The run heavy offense was able to set up a 48-yard field goal for Ben Sauls making the score 3-0 in favor of the Panthers.

Western Michigan failed to move the ball on their first few possessions. On their second possession Marquis Williams jumped the pass from Jack Salopek intended to Corey Crooms. Williams took the ball to the house making it the fourth time in Pitt’s last five games where they scored a defensive touchdown.

The Broncos following drive stalled out after the pick six, on the punt a Broncos gunner was shoved into the return man for Pitt resulting in Western Michigan getting the ball on Pitt’s end of the field. A field goal put the Broncos within a touchdown of the Panthers. Both teams traded field goals to make the score 13-6 in favor of the Panthers of Pittsburgh.

This score remained going into the half, both teams struggled to put the ball in the endzone offensively. Pitt didn’t attempt to have much of a passing game while Western Michigan struggled to move the ball on the ground

The second half started off slow until Pitt finally got the ball down the field after a Hallett pick in their own endzone. Abanikanda punched in the touchdown after the big gain from Bartholomew to get the two-score lead for the Panthers.

The two-score cushion didn’t last long for the Panthers, Western Michigan had a 44 yard completion to Sambucci to get the Broncos on Pitt’s side of the field. A double pass helped the Broncos get within a score of the Panthers right before the fourth quarter. The Broncos took the rabbit out of the hat to get back into the ball game. Salopek threw the ball behind the line of scrimmage to Sambucci. Sambucci launched the ball to WR A.J. Abbott for the touchdown.

As the lights flickered and the fireworks launched into the Kalamazoo night sky, Pitt knew they would have to play more consistent if they wanted to head back to Pittsburgh with a victory.

Pitt the proceeded to waltz down the field with a solid mix of pass and run plays. The most consistent offensive play of the night for Pitt came at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Yarnell threw a pretty pass to the corner of the endzone to the Akron transfer Konata Mumpfield to make the score 27-13.

Pitt finally finds their rhythm putting up another touchdown by Daniel Carter, which ended up icing the game. Pitt will leave this game with a fresh 2-1 record after the loss to Tennessee. Western Michigan put forth a solid effort, but it wasn’t enough to steal the win away from Pitt at home, they will be 1-2 as they head to San Jose State next week.
