Willoughby South Prevails over Brush 41-26 on Homecoming Night

Willoughby, OH – Willoughby South Senior Running Back Tyrone Singleton continued his impressive senior season with 4 more touchdowns to help move the Rebels to 4-2 with a 41-26 victory over the Brush Arcs on a chilly Friday night from Harry E. Winters Stadium.

This Western Reserve Conference matchup started with both teams forcing punts on their opening drives as each team defenses snuffed out any big plays. South’s 2nd possession led to the first 1st down of the game as Senior Quarterback Colin Quinlan found Senior Wide Receiver Bryce Figler for a gain of 17 yards. But the Brush Arcs came up with a sack on 3rd down forcing another Rebel punt. Following another 3 and out by the Arcs, South put together their first touchdown drive of the 1st half.

Collin Quinlan had a strong run to gain a first down before South turned to their Running Back Senior Tyrone Singleton. Following runs of 8 and 10 yards, Singleton rushed through the right side for a 24-yard touchdown to get the Rebels on the board 7-0 with 5:06 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Following another strong stop from the Rebels defense, South decided to use some trickery to find the endzone this time around. After receiving a toss on a reverse Junior Wide Receiver Gavin McArthur linked up with Junior Wide Receiver Terrion Singleton for a 22-yard score on a contested catch. This play ignited the South sideline and fans on a cold Friday night. The Rebels continued to control the first quarter with a fumble recovery on the final play. Senior Konner Brancatelli came up with the loose football at the bottom of the pile to halt an Arcs scoring opportunity.

On the 2nd play of the quarter South made sure to not lose any momentum they had following the turnover. Colin Quinlan dropped back to pass and found his go to target Bryce Figler streaking wide open over the middle of the field for 77 yards. Two plays later, Singleton marched into the endzone from 3 yards out for his 2nd touchdown of the half to give the Rebels a 20-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

The visitors from Lyndhurst were finally were able to break into the scoring column but it was not easy whatsoever. The Arcs relied heavily on Senior Quarterback Dimario Ballom, Junior Running Back Tannelle Rose, and Junior Running Back Chaz Brown to move the ball down the field. With 2:57 remaining in the half on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line, Tannelle Rose pushed his way into the endzone to get cut into South’s lead 20-6. The Rebels however gained back any momentum that had been lost with two scores in the final minutes of the half.

Figler had another chunk gain of 27 yards to get the Rebels back moving offensively. Tyrone Singleton took care of the rest. After a gain of 16 yards, he followed that up with a 20-yard touchdown for his 3rd score of the half giving the South Rebels a 27-6 advantage. to end the Delond Moss ended the half in style for the home team as he stepped in front of a pass and ran down the sidelines for a 54-yard pick six. At the half, South was in complete control leading 34-6.

Brush started with the ball to begin the 2nd half and put together a touchdown drive. With 9:52 remaining Chaz Brown would go on to score his 1st of 3 2nd half scores with a 50-yard touchdown. This was a pivotal drive for the visitors to get back into the game with still plenty of time remaining. South once again answered following an Arcs score. After a big 36 yard run from Quinlan, Singleton notched his 4th touchdown of the game from 31 yards out on a shifty run to give the Rebels a 41-13 lead with 7:44 to go in the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Chaz Brown would go on to add scores from 45 yards and 27 yards out to inch the Arcs closer, but it just wasn’t enough. The Rebels big first half was just too much to overcome as they prevailed over the Arcs 41-26. With the win, South improved their conference record to 3-0. With 9 touchdowns in his last 2 games, Singleton is putting up Kareem Hunt like numbers. The current Browns Running Back and South Hall of Famer wore the same number 3 as Singleton.

Next up for South is a conference matchup on the road against the Mayfield Wildcats. While Brush will travel to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney to take on the Cardinals in a non-conference matchup.
