It was a perfect 75 degrees tonight in Westlake, making it a great night for high school football. The Demons hosted the Clearview Clippers tonight and both teams looked to find their first win of the season. Westlake is wearing their all black uniforms, while Clearview are in their all white uniforms.
Clearview won the coin toss and chose to defer the ball to the Demons. Clearview will receive the ball in the second half.
The game opens up with a kick by the Clippers to #30 Izzy Flores who takes the ball all the way to the Westlake 44-yard line. Westlake started the game off quickly, establishing their running game with a 20-yard rip from Izzy Flores, giving the Demons their first first down. The Demons then looked to the air where #6 Moe Abdelhady found #22 Wes Urich in the backfield for a 13-yard gain and another first down. This put the Demons in good field position for a shot at scoring, and the next play, Moe Abdelhady found #2 Gavin McMillen over the top for the Demons first score of the night, Westlake up 7-0.
Westlake then kicked the ball off with 10:06 left in the first half. The Clearview Clippers had possession of the ball and looked to get their offense rolling. After a nice run up the middle for 6-yards by #32 Brody Wacker, #4 Joe Stephens is not able to connect on either of his passes, forcing a punt.
McMillen is the man back, and returns the ball to Westlake’s 36-yard line. On the second play of this drive, Moe Abdelhady continued to find his receivers down field, finding Gavin McMillen again over the middle, where he outran the Clippers secondary for a 59-yard touchdown, making the score 14-0.
The Clippers looked to answer back to this quiet start on their next drive. Westlake squibs their kickoff and it ends up out of bounds giving the Clippers favorable field positioning. On a third down and short, Clippers quarterback Joe Stephens is able to find #0 Christian Stevenson, giving the Clippers possession inside of Westlake’s territory. Clearview then found themselves in trouble again with a 4th and short situation. The fourth down was converted by Clearview, but the next play quarterback Christian Stevenson threw an interception to #25 Nate Meyer.
With the ball back, Westlake looks to blow this game open. After a few flags from either side, Westlake is looking at a 2nd and 29, where they are still able to convert after a nice find from quarterback Moe Abdelhady to #5 Geno Woods. In the next few plays, #32 Hadi Mustafa explodes for multiple 20+ yard gains, putting the Demons right near the goal line. Westlake then ran a qb option where Moe Abdelhady is able to find the endzone, making the score 21-0 with just seconds left in the first quarter.
Clearview, they started with the ball at their own 14 yard line. Clearview goes back to trying to establish their run game, but keep coming up short to Westlake’s defensive line. The Demons hold the Clippers to another 4th down try, when #62 Seth Eagle made a big stop at the line to give Westlake the ball back.
Westlake started to take the game over after this point. Even after getting themself into another 2nd & 29 situation, Moe Abdelhady keeps finding ways to get the Demons out of trouble and into scoring position. He finds Nate Meyer for a 35-yard play, putting the Demons right outside of the red zone. Another 19-yard strike downfield finding #87 Kareem Musleh puts Westlake in another opportunity to score. On first and goal, Hadi Mustafa is able to walk right into the endzone putting Westlake up 28-0 with 6:50 left in the 2nd quarter.
Clearview gets the ball back, and quarterback Joe Stephens threw the ball away again to #14 Samson Primm. On the Clippers 16 yard line, Moe Abdelhady threw a beautiful pass for Westlake in the back right corner of the end zone, finding Gavin McMillen for an incredibly physical catch, putting the Demons up 35-0.
Running back Christian Stevenson for Clearview is able to get the running game going a little bit for Clearview with a 20-yard run. This led to another 4th down conversion for the Clippers, moving them further down field than they had been before. After another first down in the air to #7 Tyler Hill, Christian Stevenson broke multiple tackles on his way to an explosive 20-yard touchdown. They are not able to celebrate for too long though, as Westlake blocked the PAT.
The Demons are now up 35-6 with 57 seconds left in the half. After two missed passes, Moe Abdelhady found Geno Woods over the middle and he outran the defense for a 54-yard touchdown right before the half. The half ends after two more plays from the Clippers. Demons 42, Clippers 12.
The Clearview Clippers started the half with the ball, trying to get back into the game. Christian Stevenson picked up right where he left off, with a 30-yard run and then a 31-yard run, putting the Clippers near the goal line. Quarterback Joe Stephens finds the endzone on a quarterback run making the score 42-12. The 2-point conversion came up short.
Westlake continued dominating on the ground and their next possession ended up in another touchdown from Hadi Mustafa. After a 2-point conversion try, the Demons convert and are up 50-12.
Clearview, on their next possession, ran the ball very efficiently, getting to the red zone after a 26 yard run from Kahlil Howard. Joe Stephens is then able to walk into the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the night.
Westlake’s final possession ended in a 69-yard rushing touchdown from Izzy Flores, continuing the Demons dominance on the offensive side of the ball. The Clearview Clippers held the ball and the game ended with a final score of 57-18, Westlake Demons.
The players of the game for Westlake were #6 quarterback Moe Abdelhady, who threw 14-17 with 3 passing and 1 rushing touchdown, with 285 all purpose yards, and #2 Gavin McMillen, who had 5 catches for 115 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Clearview’s player of the game was runningback #0 Christian Stevenson who rushed 16 times for 125 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Westlake moves to 1-1 on the season and get ready to host Warrensville Heights next Friday.
Clearview is now 0-2 so far, and looks to bounce back against Vermillion at home next Friday.
