Parma, OH – The Westlake Demons took on the Normandy Invaders at Byers Field Friday night, bringing the heat from previous weekends to this Friday with a score of 42-19, Westlake took home the win so far from home.
Normandy kicked off this Friday night game to Westlake and they met them at the 10-yard line to show them the kind of defense they’d be dealing with tonight. Putting a full stop to their offense within the first 90 seconds of the game.
Quickly turning over the ball, Normandy opened their offense with a 15-yard screen and a 10-yard screen from senior Jakob Muniak. Slowly making pace up the field, Normandy quickly returned the ball to Westlake, letting the crowd this Friday night know this will be a hard fought battle.
Westlake, shortly after getting possession made their move with senior Moe Abdelhaldy throwing a 20-yard pass to junior Nate Meyer, where after a 25-yard run made it to Normandy’s endzone. Sophomore Carter McCann scored the extra point, putting 7 points on the board for Westlake.
After Normandy got possession of the ball, they started their drive up the field with a 15-yard rush from senior Hero Agidigbi. Unfortunately after though, most of this progress was erased by 2 back to back holding calls on Normandy’s behalf.
This was not the end of the drive though, as senior Cameron Hayden made a 20-yard drive to get the team back on track. But Westlake made it clear that their defense would be a mountain to scale for Normandy and stopped the ball for a turnover, this concluded the first half.
Westlake started the second half with the same heat they brought in the first, relentless and full of strategic calls. With the very next play being a 27-yard pass from Abdelhady into the endzone for another touchdown, pushing them up to 13-0 against Normandy.
The Invaders started their offense with a 20-yard rush from senior Nick Williams to open the second half. This wasn’t enough to help Normandy get the momentum they needed against the Westlake Demons as the ball was quickly turned over once again.
Westlake brought the same momentum from the first half with screens and rushes at key moments to keep the ball out of Normandy’s hands. Abdelhaldy threw another 25-yard pass to senior Gavin McMillen to push Westlake to the 20-yard line and shortly after, passing another 15-yard completion to sophomore Ben Lasinis for another touchdown.
McCann scored the extra point, putting another 7 on the board for Westlake by the halfway point of the second quarter.
Normandy couldn’t quite get the momentum they needed on the next possession and the ball very quickly wound up in Westlakes hands once again. McMillen made a 20-yard drive on his opening play of the series, followed up by another 25-yard rush from junior Hadi Mustafa.
Normandy couldn’t bring enough heat to the half to stop Westlake from scoring however, as shortly after that rush senior Wes Urich with help from Abdelhady scored a 15-yard touchdown. The extra point was brought in by Westlake putting them 28 points up from Normandy at this point in the game.
Both teams couldn’t seem to get enough traction again to score as Westlake brought a stop to Normandy’s last drive of the half, with the score being 28-0 to Westlake at the end of the first half.
Opening into the second half, Normandy started with possession and quickly sent the ball back to Westlake which marked the beginning of their first series in the second half. Their drive opened with another screen from Abdelhagy to McMillian resulting in a 30-yard rush, following that was another touchdown from Abdelhagy and senior Ali Assad and an extra point from McCann.
This series put up another 7 points for Westlake, making the score 35-0. With a now perpetually running clock per league regulations, the pressure was now on for Normandy to make some movement that was sorely missing in the first half.
The Invaders fought hard, as drive after drive, push after push, they finally made it to the endzone with 90 seconds left in the third half with sophomore Brody Tusai. He put 6 points on the board along with an extra point, making the score now 35-7, buying some time for Normandy to make their move.
Westlake brought their usual heat to the series, ending the quarter at the 35-yard line.
Starting the fourth quarter, Westlake brought their usual offensive heat from the start of the game to the end. This fire started with a 35-yard pass from Abdelhady to Mcmillian, resulting in another touchdown and extra point scored by McCann, putting the Westlake Demons at 42 points.
This wasn’t the end for Normandy however, as on their first play of the series, they scored a 60-yard touchdown from senior Cameron Hayden, and another by Jordan Linard making the score 42-19 at 6:21 on the clock.
This was unfortunately the end of Normandy’s momentum however, as Westlake ran the clock until it hit zero and they secured victory with a score 42-19, bringing the win back home with them.
