Wahlert Catholic High School Golden Eagles vs. Camanche Storm

Big opening night for Wahlert’s Golden Eagles as they took on the Camanche Storm at their home field at Loras College. It was the first Friday night lights game this season as the Golden Eagles were looking to improve their 10-3 record from last year.

First Quarter
Winning the flip Wahlert deferred and kicked off in the 1st. Wahlert’s Golden Eagles came out with a vengeance against the Storm. The last time these two played each other was in 2021 when the Storm came out on top 35-21. This was not the case tonight. The Golden Eagles set the tone very early by controlling most of the 1st quarter and scoring just before it ended. The 2nd quarter was no different. Luke Welbes, intercepted a Storm pass then Michael Bormann, ran for 45 yards the next play to put the Golden Eagles on the Storms 13-yard line. Kevin Bradley, then ran the ball in for a 13-yard touchdown. After a turnover on downs the Eagles scored again.

Bormann ran another 43 yards for his own touchdown this time. Christopher Schmitt, nailed his third extra point of the night. Camanche turned the ball over shortly and the Eagles started moving once again but then Drew Riley, fumbled in the midfield. Storm took over at the Golden Eagles’ 47-yard line. The Storms pushed down the field to fall short and Riley broke up the touchdown pass with an interception to end the half. Wahlert Golden Eagles were up 21-0 at the half.

Second Half
Both teams came out fired up for the second half of the game. Wahlert received the kick, and it was returned by Tom Scherr, for an 86-yard touchdown. The Storm came right back with their punch and within two plays Mark Sanders ran for 79 yards to put the Storm on the board. The Storm was still down 27-6. Wahlert Golden Eagles took no time and moved the ball down the field and Tate Schope, rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

All of these touchdowns were scored within three minutes, this quarter was a boxing match. The Storm didn’t make much out of their next drive and had to fight back from their own 21-yard line. The Storm was forced to punt, and the Eagles returned it to the Storm’s 34-yard line. Bormann and Kenny Petraitis, went back-to-back with 20-yard runs and Petraitis took his 20-yard run to the endzone. The Storm and Eagles took turns the rest of the quarter, but the 3rd quarter ended with the Golden Eagles on top 41-6.

Fourth Quarter
The Storm started the 4th quarter on Wahlert’s 29-yard line. They controlled the ball until they scored with 9:45 left in the game. This quarter the teams spent equal time in control. Camanche Storm’s Josh Liles kicked off out of bounds after their touchdown on the Eagle’s 34-yard line. The Golden Eagles moved down the field very consistently to score with 5:14 left in the game. The Storm controlled the ball for the rest of the game and failed to score again.

The Wahlert Golden Eagles won 48-12, some of their standout players were
