Ursuline Powers Past Glenville on Late Touchdown Pass, 42-38

1st Quarter

This highly anticipated Division IV semifinal playoff game started with Ursuline trying to surprise Glenville with a pooch kick, but it ended up biting the Fighting Irish in the butt. The Tarblooders ended up taking the short kick at their own 45-yard line and running it to the Ursuline 10-yard line to start their first drive.

The Tarblooders used all 4 of their downs to score the game’s first touchdown on a 3-yard run by D’Shawntae Jones. Glenville 6, Ursuline 0 (PAT No Good).

Ursuline, receiving the kickoff to start their first drive, was once again hurt by a special teams play. The Fighting Irish’s returner misjudged the kick, and it went over his head. He had to down the ball at his own 1-yard line.

During their first drive, Ursuline stalled at their own 35-yard line. Fortunately for the Fighting Irish, their special teams found that third times the charm. They were able to get a first down on a fake punt, and advance the ball to the Tarblooders 48-yard line.

With new life and momentum, the Fighting Irish were able to score their first touchdown on a 48-yard run by DeMarcus McElroy. Ursuline 8, Glenville 6 (2pt conv. Good).

After receiving the ball, Glenville was hampered by a couple of penalties, which stalled their drive in 3 plays, and they had to punt the ball back to Ursuline.

Ursuline, now with a short field, used a long pass of 40 yards to get down to the Glenville 3-yard line. Then a power rush by McElroy led them to score their second touchdown on a 3-yard run. Ursuline 14, Glenville 6 (2pt conv.  No Good).

Down by 8 points in bad weather and looking to get in control of this game, Glenville started their drive on their own 35 yard. Sticking mostly to the run game, the Tarblooders moved the ball up the field to the Fighting Irish’s 10-yard line as the first quarter ended.

2nd Quarter

On the first play of the second quarter, Glenville used one play to push the ball into the endzone behind a 6-yard run by Jones. Glenville 14, Ursuline 14 (2pt conv. Good).

With 11:55 left to play in the half, Ursuline received the ball on their own 34-yard line. Benefiting from a personal foul penalty by Glenville, Ursuline was able to move the ball to the Tarblooders 43-yard line but could not build upon this success. They were forced to punt the ball back to Glenville after a being sacked on 3rd and 4.

Momentum clearly on their side, the Tarblooders took over on the Fighting Irish’s 48-yard line and put their ground game back on display. Using about 3 minutes of time, Glenville moved the ball all the way down to the Ursuline 22-yard line. Unfortunately, they failed to convert a 4th and 1 at the 14-yard line and turned the ball over on downs to the Fighting Irish.

With 5:58 left in the half, Ursuline found themselves on the bad side of penalties and ineffectively went 3 and out before they punted the ball to Glenville.

At the 4:11 mark, Glenville started their next drive at their own 32-yard line. With the run game being their most effective tool, the Tarblooders were able to move down the field to the Fighting Irish’s 35-yard line with 1:18 to go in the half. After both teams used a timeout to gather what they wanted to do, Glenville went to the air on a short pass that turned into a 35-yard passing touchdown from Ashton Pugh to Damarion Witten. Glenville 22, Ursuline 14 (2pt conv. Good).

Ursuline received the ball at their own 25-yard line with 1:11 left on the clock. The Fighting Irish knew they had to move the ball quickly, so they went to the air. With a few passes, a couple of quarterback keepers, a questionable roughing the passer foul, and 2 other personal fouls by Glenville, Ursuline found themselves at the Tarblooder 4-yard line with 3 seconds left in the half. Looking even the score, the Fighting Irish used a double reverse pass from Will Burney to Marc Manning to score the touchdown. Ursuline 22, Glenville 22 (2pt conv. Good)

3rd Quarter

Ursuline received the second half kickoff and benefited from an unsportsmanlike penalty on Glenville. The Fighting Irish started from the Tarblooder’s 45-yard line. Mixing up the run and pass, Ursuline used 3 minutes and 13 seconds to move up the short field and take the lead on a 10-yard passing touchdown by Brady Shannon to Dean Boyd. Ursuline 29, Glenville 22 (PAT good).

Glenville, looking to answer the Ursuline score, put the ball on the ground for the first two plays of their drive but were forced to punt the ball after they could not convert on a 3rd and 7.

With just over 7 minutes left in the quarter, Ursuline took the ball at their own 22-yard line. The Fighting Irish used one play to connect on a 52-yard pass play that gave them the ball at the Tarblooder 22-yard line.

At the 4:57 mark, Ursuline used their own ground game to power into the endzone on a 6-yard touchdown run by McElroy. Ursuline 35, Glenville 22 (PAT No Good).

After muffing the kickoff return, Glenville was able to still start their drive at their own 26-yard line.

The Tarblooders, with life still in them, fought with tough runs up the field but penalties ultimately stopped their drive at the 50-yard line. Glenville had to punt the ball to the Ursuline 16-yard line, where Ursuline took over at the 1:07 mark of the 3rdquarter.

4th Quarter

The Fighting Irish started the final quarter with the ball and their driving continuing on their own 37-yard line. Unfortunately, after a few plays, Ursuline had to punt the ball to Glenville. Still with determination in them, the Tarblooders used a 40-yard kickoff return to start their drive at the Fighting Irish’s 30-yard line.

Using the legs of their running back Da’Shaun Whatley, the Tarblooders were able to get all the way down to the Fighting Irish’s 5-yard line, before scoring on a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Raphael Williams. Ursuline 35 ,Glenville 30 (2pt conv. Good).

With 8:03 left in the game, Ursuline received the ball at their own 10-yard line. Feeling a little pressure from the Tarblooders, the Fighting Irish were able to get out of bad field position. They got a first down on a quarterback keeper, but the Tarblooders picked off the pass play and took over possession at their own 30-yard line.

On one play from scrimmage, Glenville scored on a quarterback keeper of 70 yards by D’Shawntae Jones to take the lead with 5:05 left in the game. Glenville 38, Ursuline 35 (2pt conv. Good).

Ursuline needing to answer the Glenville score, started their drive at their own 10-yard line, but after two plays Ursuline fumbled the ball to Glenville at their own 24-yard line.

Glenville, smelling blood in the water, used their bread and butter run game to use up the clock and get to the Ursuline 1 yard line with 1:59 left to play in the game. The Tarblooders, wanting to put the proverbially nail in the Fighting Irish’s coffin, were stalled at the 1-yard line on 4thdown. Ursuline took over on downs and used two pass plays and 34 seconds to score on a 68-yard pass play from Shannon to Jakylan Irving. Ursuline 42, Glenville 38 (PAT Good).

With 1:09 left on the clock and starting at the Ursuline 49-yard line, Glenville set themselves ready for their final drive. The Tarblooders, with personal fouls hampering them all game, started the first play with a 15-yard personal foul penalty after completing a 10-yard pass play.

After a few plays that resulted in only 4 yards gained, Glenville took a sack on a 4th and 11 play, turning the ball over to Ursuline on downs and presumably ending the game. Final Score: Ursuline 42, Glenville 38.
