UFC 264 took place tonight from the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here are some quick hits from tonight’s big card.
Jessica Eye lost by decision to Jennifer Maia with a UD scorecard across the board. Eye, has now lost 3 straight, 4 of her last 5 and is just 5 – 9-1 overall in her UFC career. Also on the undercard, former TUF Standout Ryan Hall got knocked out by Lila Topuria late into the opening round of their bout.
Speaking of the undercard, MMA veteran Carlos Condit dropped a tough decision loss to Max Griffin. It was a big win for Griffin, his third straight and easily the biggest win of his career. For the former UFC Welterweight Champion Condit, the loss drops his overall record to 32-14 and his 6th loss in his last 8 fights.
The main card started off with a nearly perfect performance of persistence punching power from Sean O’Malley who just kept bringing the heat in his three-round slugfest with Kris Moutinho. Both men took the fight on short notice but were anything but underprepared as they both brought it! The O’Malley onslaught finally became to much as the fight was stopped in the third.
Up next, the fans saw Irene Aldana waste little time in outboxing and putting away Yana Kunitskaya. It was a tremendous performance with her hands and she eventually laid a brutal beatdown on Kunitskaya. Aldana is now 13-6 and not someone to be taken lightly.
The MMA experiment with Greg Hardy may be close to be done with for good. Hardy has shown again he just cannot compete with the bigger and more experienced names in the UFC Heavyweight Division. He couldn’t get out of the first 70 seconds against Tai Tuivasa. Hardy came right at him, tried to bang it out with Tai who is a sharp shooter and put him to sleep.
Anyone who doesn’t want Colby Covington to challenge Kamura Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship next literally has nothing left that they could possibly say. Neither Gilbert Burns or Stephen Wonderboy Thompson looked impressive in the co main event tonight. Burns won on all three scorecards in a lackluster fight that saw Burns use takedowns to win all three rounds on the Kee On Sports card with ease. 29-28 on the official ones however.
As for Thompson, I remain puzzled by the hype that surrounds him. The last time he earned a finish, was 2016 over Johnny Hendricks. Since then, in the last 5 years, he is 4 – 4 – 1 with two of the most boring title fights against Tyron Woodley I have ever seen. I’m just not seeing it for Wonderboy.
After another extremely impressive win by Dustin Poirier people will want to call for Conor McGregors retirement. That’s just not the issue as McGregor can still fight. The thing is, he is just not on the level of Dustin Poirier who is one of the best in the world.
It makes you wonder just how damn good Khabib is who embarrassed Dustin. It was a great first round, but once Conor went for that guillotine, he never recovered. The result will be a doctor stoppage victory for DP as McGregor’s leg / ankle broke badly with about 7 seconds to go in the thrilling first round.
