DETROIT, MI – Max Hollway furthered his case as best pound for pound fighter in the world with his second consecutive dominant win over Jose Aldo. Holloway took the title off of Aldo in June at UFC 212 in an upset and then proved it was no upset tonight as he took care of Aldo in 3 rounds via TKO. It is the best Holloway has ever looked and appears to be in store for a long run with the UFC Featherweight Championship.
The knockout of the night and possibly the year came in the semi-main event as Francis Ngannou hit Alistair Overeem so hard, it looked like a rock em sock em robot punch as Overeems head nearly left his shoulders. It is perhaps the most brutal knockout in UFC history. It is only a matter of time before Ngannou faces off and challenges current UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic.
If Ngannou had the KO of the night and Holloway had the performance of the night, then the Fight of the night was a 3 round classic between Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. This one was a back and forth thriller and both men landed bombs for three straight rounds of fury. In the end, it was Alvarez landing a perfectly placed knee to win via KO at 3:14 of the third round. Both men have a bright future in the UFC and Gaethje showed the heart of a champion in the loss. This in loss in fact, is the first of his career.
The main card had two decisions on it as well as Tecia Torress outscored Michelle Waterson and Henry Cejudo outpointed Sergio Pettis as well.
The undercard featured the following knockouts
Paul Felder over Charles Oliveria
Yancy Medeiros over Alex Oliveria
Amanda Bobby Cooper over Angela Medina
