Twinsburg Defense Shines in 32-14 Victory Over Stow-Munroe Falls

Twinsburg celebrated their homecoming weekend in style, with a dominant defensive performance in the first half and a swift offensive performance in the second half.

Both offenses got off to a slow start in tonight’s contest, as each team punted on their first drive. Stow QB Jacob Harrington was sacked by Tigers defender Declan Malenchek. When Twinsburg got the ball for the first time, they stalled as well after QB Joey Pollock was sacked. The Twinsburg defense held up throughout the first quarter, as they forced Harrington into making wild throws, one of which was a batted pass that resulted in a turnover on downs for the Bulldogs.

The Tigers found their footing on offense in the second quarter, as WR Cameron Wright ran a beautiful route up the seam and caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Pollock to get Twinsburg on the board first. The extra point doinked off the right upright and kept the score to 6-0. The Tiger defense continued to hold on strong, forcing another three-and-out. Twinsburg nearly completely shifted the momentum of the game on a muffed punt but the Tigers retained possession.

The Tigers can thank their lucky stars that they were able to recover that muffed punt, as their drive ended with a 41 yard touchdown in which WR Steven Cammack ‘mossed’ the defender to take a potential interception away and extend the lead for the Tigers. An unsuccessful rushing attempt on the two point conversion forced Twinsburg to settle for 6 again to make it a 12-0 ballgame.

Towards the end of the second quarter, Steven Cammack reared his head once again, this time on the defensive side. After Stow had gotten the ball into Tiger territory thanks to a personal foul, Cammack picked off Harrington in the endzone to nullify the scoring threat. The Tigers were actually close to putting points on the board to end the half but Pollock’s hail mary pass fell incomplete although it looked like a controversial no-call on pass interference.

The third quarter started with a bang, as Twinsburg running back Rob Cocroft took the kickoff 60 yards to get  the Tigers inside the Stow 40 yard line. However, a holding penalty sent them back to midfield. They were ultimately forced to punt on that drive. On their next drive, Jacob Harrington threw a beautiful 30 yard pass to the endzone that went through the hands of Jack Smith.

Nonetheless, the Bulldogs gave it their all on this drive, fighting off multiple 3rd downs and long and converting a huge 4th down in the red zone as Jack Smith redeemed himself with an 8 yard touchdown catch to put the Bulldogs on the board. Yet another missed PAT left the score at 12-6 in favor of Twinsburg. Steven Cammack once again terrorized the bulldogs by breaking free on a 30 yard touchdown catch to extend the Tiger lead to 18-6. Twinsburg failed the two point conversion so the score remained with multiples of 6.

Twinsburg RB Quincy Newsom ran the ball frequently, as he had 17 carries for 72 yards by the start of the 4th quarter. He came up big on defense as he took an errant pass from Harrington to the house for a 19 yard pick 6 to blow the game open 25-6. Stow-Munroe Falls answered rather quickly, as RB Teddy Gregory Jr. bulldozed his way through the Twinsburg linebackers en route to a touchdown thanks to Joey Lehner’s 13 yard catch in the endzone. A beautifully executed fake extra point on fourth down cut the deficit to 25-14. Quincy Newsom put the icing on the cake with an 8 yard touchdown run on Twinsburg’s next drive to extend the Tiger lead to 32-14.

Player of the Game

Tonight’s player of the game is twofold. The first honor goes to Twinsburg WR Steven Cammack who not only had 9 catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns, but he also made a clutch interception in the endzone to prevent the Bulldogs from getting points.

The other nod goes to Twinsburg RB Quincy Newsom, who earns back to back player of the game nods from me. Like Cammack, he came up huge on offense and defense. He ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while also adding a 19 yard pick 6 to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter.
