The Twin Tornadoes Hit the Course on Holey Moley II

Over the last ten days, UFC and NASCAR have returned to the airwaves of America in a time where there are very little sports on TV. Coming up on Thursday, it is time to have some mini golf on the air.

Thursday, May 21st will be the season premiere of Holey Moley II: The Sequel on ABC, airing at 9:00 PM Eastern time.

The series, led by Executive Producer Stephen Curry, returns for more exciting action where miniature golf becomes extreme. With Joe Tessitore, Rob Riggle and Jeannie Mai on commentary, 96 contestants will battle for a $250,000 grand prize over 13 episodes. Eight competitors will compete each week, paving the way for the final show.

I caught up with two of the contestants on the show, Skyler and Spencer Nick for a Zoom interview last weekend. I met Skyler and Spencer, also known as the “Twin Tornadoes” when I was an undergraduate student at Lake Erie College. The three of us were involved in Kappa Sigma for the duration of my college career together while sharing the same birthday.

Amid the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nick twins were in California taping the show. “Literally, there are no sports going on now but the last sporting event that you watched or participated in was yourself. It’s weird. As soon as we returned to Chicago, everything finally stopped for the current situation.”

Skyler and Spencer shared their thoughts on what Holey Moley II is all about. “Holey Moley II is the most extreme mini golf competition you can think of. NBA Champion Stephen Curry loves mini golf, and this is his show. It brings together people from all over the country, all different skill levels. It’s golf and a physical obstacle course-all in one! The best way to describe it is Most Extreme Elimination Challenge mixed with golf.”

Skyler added, “Be ready for a family friendly, action packed event for this summer. Steph Curry and the surrounding cast, crew, producers are going to bring a show to you. Be excited for some fun this season!”

With everyone coming together for the show, it allowed the twins to develop relationships with those around them. “The cast and crew were phenomenal to interact with throughout the process. We were in this together from all over the country. Everybody had different skill levels and we were able to pick the brains of those around us.”

Stepping on the putting green is a bit different than the previous television appearances for the “Twin Tornadoes”. Over the years, the Nick twins have been featured on the morning news, two different reality shows and an Investigation Discovery show.

The pair of twins started as the “Twinterns” on the WGN Morning News before being cast for an episode of the “Evil Twins” show, titled “Big Boy Killers” in 2014. Both appeared on the only season of the VH1 reality series, “Twinning” during the Summer of 2015. In 2018, they competed on “Worst Cooks in America” for Season 12.

Despite being in a new element, they used their previous experiences to prepare themselves for what’s to come on the golf course.

“We are a set of twins; I mean we are already weird enough. Holey Moley fit the mold of us being out of place. We are the square pegs that you can fit anywhere. We are the first pair of brothers, let alone twins on the show.” But it remains to be seen whether they compete as a pair or individuals.

As seen on the shirts worn by the pair, the “Twin Tornadoes” moniker was able to come to life for the show.

“Obviously, our nickname is the Twin Tornadoes. It came from our mom [Sally] because of our destructive nature as kids at home. Robin from the Wardrobe department helped create the logo and it fits us really well.”

The “Twin Tornadoes” nickname allows the Nick twins to be located on social media. Their handle on Twitter and Instagram is @TwinTornadoes92 if you feel inclined to follow them. Tell them Tyler sent ya! Hahaha
