Going into this game both teams needed wins to improve their odds of going to Detroit and represent the MAC West. Ball State needed a few things to happen while Toledo just needs to win out. Toledo increased their odds winning 28-21 in a tightly contested battle. Toledo will now be waiting to see if Western Michigan wins tomorrow to see if their ticket is punched for Detroit.

Both teams looked to get the run game started but struggled to get rolling in the cold weather. It wasn’t till the second possession that Toledo scored and take an early lead. A penalty helped the Rockets get the ball down the field, the dynamic duo of Dequan Finn and Jerjuan Newton were the ones that punched in the touchdown for the first score of the game.

Toledos offense kept stalling out while Ball Starts running game from Carson Steele ran right through the Rockets front seven to tie the ball game up. Steele was unstoppable the entire first half, he got into the endzone again to increase the Ball State lead 14-7.

Toledo tied the ball game up with a 47-yard pass from Finn to Devin Maddox. Maddox jumped up for the ball beating the defender and knocking him over as he waltzed into the endzone. Both teams had chances to score before half but failed, the Cardinals had a promising drive as sack took them out of field goal range and ended the half.

Carson Steele scored his third and finale touchdown for his team with a 34-yard rush. Ball State had all the momentum to start the half after stopping Toledo’s opening possession and driving down the field. Toledo responded right away with help from Peny Boone who had his only touchdown of the day off of a three yard rush.

With a tied game both teams played suffocating defense for the remainder of the game. Steele was continuing to rack up the yards but couldn’t punch one in the endzone. Just like the first half John Paddock failed to lead his team down the field and get over 100 yards passing.

The fourth quarter went down to the very end as Toledo drove down the field with around 3:24 left in the game. Toledo ran to ball to the redzone forcing Ball state to expect the run. Dequan Finn was given a RPO where he faked the run and sprinted out to hit tight end Jamal Turner with 1:18 left in the game to take the lead.

Ball State achieve what they failed to do for four quarters, throw the ball down the field. Paddock was able to complete a first down on a third and long but was shut down after that. The following third down, Paddock was sacked and was intercepted on fourth down by Maxen Hook to seal the game.

Toledo took the knee as the fireworks met the Toledo night sky to seal a perfect night of Tuesday night MACtion. Toledo waits tomorrow to see if they can punch their tickets now or later to Detroit.
