The Iron Claw: Five Major Mistakes in the Film

The entire Kerry Von Erich storyline was off.

Let’s get a couple of things straight here, because they seemed to use Kerry in a way, that was more so convenient then actually accurate.  While yes, Kerry did win the NWA World Championship from Ric Flair on May 6, 1984 at the Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, he lost the belt back to Flair 18 days later as planned.

The movie depicts it as he won the belt from Flair and was due some long title reign of several years, but instead he went out drunk that same night and got in a motorcycle accident, lost his foot and had to drop the title all in one day.  This is far from the actual truth, Kerry didn’t lose his foot in the motorcycle accident until June 4, 1986.  More than two plus years after his victory over Flair.

Kerry won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in August of 1990 at WWF SummerSlam.  He only held the belt for less than 90 days, as he couldn’t control his demons and dropped it back to Mr. Perfect pretty quickly.

In the movie, they make it seem like he was still the champion at Christmas of that same year when he comes home to visit the family.  Then, about 90 seconds later, they show Kerry on the cusp of suicide out of nowhere, and then he commits it with what seems like only a few days after the Christmas visit.

In truth, Kerry Von Erich was with the WWF until August if 1992, and didn’t commit suicide until February of 1993.

  1. Very good review. I noticed all 5 points you discussed. Give Iron Claw another 90 minutes and the makers could have effectively told the Chris and Lance stories. Other points were embellished to build an compelling narrative.
