Avon does what they have been doing for the last decade. They came to Grafton and dominated Midview on their homecoming weekend for a 56-12 win Friday night.
It was an average start to the game as Midview got the ball to start and immediately fed the ball to running back Jace Wright. Quarterback Brennen Newton found Kellen Desimone for a 4th down conversion. On the next drive, Midview went for it on fourth down again, but Eagles defensive back Fin Jerdonik found the ball and took the pass from Newton for a 45-yard pick six touchdown to give Avon a 7-0 lead.
After a Midview three and out on the next possession, Avon would start off on a bad note their first play on offense all night. Quarterback Trevor Sykora had his pass picked off by Midview’s Defensive back Owen Schofield and took it for a 36-yard pick six. This cut the deficit to 7-6 after a failed extra point.
Avon started their next possession much better as Jerdonik and running back Michael Colburn gave the eagles good momentum on offense. With help from other receivers like Caeden Bennett and Bryce Chura making big plays, Avon fed the ball to Colburn for an 8-yard gain to the end zone to extend the lead to 14-6.
Wright and Desimone helped the Middies get back some of the lost time on offense and made some nice plays to give Midview some momentum. After getting into the redzone thanks to help from Owen Underwood, Newton found Desimone in the back left in the end zone as Desimone made a one-handed catch for a touchdown for the Middies and a 14-12 deficit after a failed 2-point conversion.
The eagles then took the kickoff to the redzone right after and after a failed backwards pass and a bad penalty, Eagles QB Casey Birth found Jerdonik open on a go route for a fourth down conversion and scored for a 21-12 lead.
The Wright and Desimone duo, along with a big catch from Robert Flachbart, helped the Middies get a great chance to score. After a few failed runs for a touchdown from Newton, he would then fumble underneath, and the Eagles recovered for a goal line stand.
After a big catch from Grayden Beerbohm to get them into a more comfortable field position, New Running back Dean Andress ran for two ten-yard gains that helped a Sykora to Gavin Koehler touchdown from 48 yards out to give the Eagles a 28-12 lead.
On the Middies first play after the kickoff, Newton’s pass was picked off from Eagles DB Cody Canning to give the Eagles a great chance to extend the lead. Avon did not do anything after the turnover and went into the half 28-12.
On the first offensive play of the second half, after an Avon penalty on that kickoff, Eagles RB Michael Coulburn took the handoff and weaved through the Middies defense and went in for a 93-yard TD run and extended the lead for Avon at 35-12.
Midview got some good plays from Wright and tight end Sawyer McMillen, getting them into good field position. Avon then ruined it with an interception from linebacker Adrian LaBianca. Good runs from Andress and a good catch from Beerbohm helped set up a Colburn run from 4 yards out to extend the lead to 42-12 and start the running clock for the rest of the night.
Newton then had another interception thrown and this time it was caught by Luke Pavey. Good Plays from Jerdonik and RJ Ross helped set up a Pavey touchdown run a few plays later from three yards out for a 49-12 lead.
Midview then put in their backups and gave the ball to Logan Winkler for minimal gains. Eagles running backs Griffin Schindley, RJ Ross and receiver Colton Bird got a lot of big gains that helped set up a Colin Fox to Bird connection for a 1-yard touchdown pass to grow the lead to 56-12.
Midview then ran out the clock for a 56-12 win for Avon.
Avon took advantage of their depth as they had way more kids dressed and available to play than Midview. Avon Will host Amherst Steele and Midview will travel to Elyria for their week eight matchups.
