The Berea-Midpark Titans Run Past the Amherst Comets 48-7

BEREA, OH – The Berea-Midpark Titans hosted the Amherst Comets at George Finnie Stadium. The Titans looked to bounce back after a close loss to Avon Lake last week. The Amherst Comets looked to get their first win of the season after their loss to Midview last week. The Titans were unstoppable and won the game with a score of 48-7.  The Titans offense stole the show tonight and it was all led by senior running back Hudson Devins, senior quarterback Troy Shick and junior Austin Clay.

Hudson Devins had an amazing performance tonight. His speed and intensity led the offense to a stellar performance. He scored four out of the seven touchdowns for the Titans tonight. His 42-yard rushing touchdown impressed many, but his 82-yard rushing touchdown was the most electrifying play on the night. Devins out did himself tonight as he also scored a 78-yard rushing touchdown later in the game. He was simply unstoppable.

Troy Shick led his offense to a great performance. His veteran presence was on display as his accuracy and quick decision making helped contribute to the offense’s stellar performance.

Austin Clay got the game going after returning the opening kick for 48-yards. His return got the Titans energy going early in the game and they never looked back. Clay was both a weapon on offense and defense tonight. Additionally he made a crucial block that ended one of the Comet’s drives. His speed and athleticism were a key part in the Titans win.

The Titans got off to a strong start after a 48-yard punt return by junior wide receiver Austin Clay. Following the amazing return, Troy Shick picked up right where Clay left off. He linked up with senior tight end Josh Medina for a 42-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Nikola Rabljenovic came on and added the extra point for the Titans, making the score 7-0 with 10:56 left in the first quarter.

The Titans offense could not be stopped by the Comets defense tonight. On their second drive of the night, Troy Shick and his offense made several incredible plays to help the Titans score. Senior running back Hudson Devins rushed for 21-yards to start off the drive. The Titans kept the momentum going after Shick completed a 16-yard pass to junior tight end Devyn Zahursky to give the Titans the first down.

The Titans quickly found themselves in the red zone after Shick’s remarkable 27-yard completion to junior wide receiver Brayden Cupach. It was Hudson Devins whose speed led the Titans to their second touchdown of the quarter. His 10-yard run into the end zone helped the Titans add more points to their lead. Rabljenovic missed the extra point and the Titans were up 13-0 with 5:55 left in the 1st quarter.

On the Comets second drive of the night, the Titans forced a fumble to get the ball right back. The Titans capitalized on this opportunity by scoring on this drive as well. Hudson Devins started off the drive with a 11-yard carry to put the Titans back into the red zone. Troy Shick threw a perfect pass to Josh Medina to score a 15-yard touchdown for the Titans. Rabljenovic redeemed himself and got the extra point to put the Titans up 20-0 with 3:59 left in the 1st quarter.

Even though things did not start off how the Comets were hoping, they did not give up. Sophomore quarterback Cole Norris displayed his versatility on this drive. He rushed for 26 yards to put the Comets into the red zone. Norris threw a complete pass to sophomore wide receiver Eli Solak to put the Comets at first and goal. Norris put his speed on display as he ran the ball into the end zone for the Comets first touchdown of the night. Sophomore kicker Nathan Stewart came on and got the extra point to put the score at 20-7 with just two seconds left in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter was all about Hudson Devins. On the Titans first drive of the half he rushed for 42-yards directly into the end zone for the touchdown. Rabljenovic came on and kicked the extra point to make the score 27-7 with 7:14 left in the half.

Devins could not be stopped by the Comets defense as he raced down the field and right into the end zone again with an 82-yard rushing touchdown. Rabljenovic continued his busy night, scoring another extra point for the Titans, putting the score at 34-7 with 2:57 left in the half.

The Comets fought back towards the end of the half. Cole Norris threw a 14-yard completion to senior wide receiver Cameron Gendics to put the Comets into field goal range. Nathan Stewart came on to attempt a 48-yard field goal but missed the kick.

After the half Hudson Devins didn’t miss a beat. A strong performance by the Titans defense to force the Comets to punt gave the ball right back and it was Devins’ time to shine. After a hand off by Shick, Devins could not be caught by the Comets defense. He raced down the field for a 78-yard rushing touchdown. Rabljenovic came on and kicked another perfect extra point to make the score 41-7 with 9:53 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Titans still were not done. Sophomore quarterback Danny Bowser came on to play with just minutes left in the game. He handed the ball off to sophomore running back Justin McDonnell who ran into the end zone for another Titans touch down. Sophomore kicker Jaylen Ball came on and scored the extra point for the Titans. The score moved to 48-7 with only 7:12 left to play.

The Titans had a great team win as it would all end 48-7.

For the player of the game, Hudson Devins was my obvious choice. He had 4 out of the 7 touchdowns for the Titans. He had a 42-yard rushing touchdown, a 78-yard rushing touchdown and an 82-yard rushing touchdown. He had 9 carries and rushed for 256 yards. Devins could not be stopped, and he was on fire tonight.

Next week, the Titans look to keep their momentum going as they travel to Avon to play the Eagles on Friday, September 30.

The Comets host the Avon Lake Shoremen as they look to bounce back and get their first win of the season on Friday, September 30.
