Takeaways From the First Four Kent State Games

The 2023 college football season is going by fast, after week four Kent State is 1-3, and off to a slow start that many Golden Flash fans feared it would. Here is what I have seen from the Kent State season, and I  will try to provide a little optimism for Flash supporters.

This season opened up against UCF on Thursday night of Labor Day weekend, UCF was favored by 30 plus points going into the game, and UCF ended up winning by 50. That game may not have had any Kent State touchdowns. However, there was a 60-yard-plus play made by Chrishon McCray that was called back because of a penalty. But it did have a spark to it.

Unfortunately as Mid American conference team when you play the bigger schools the margin for error is small, and Kent State made errors that game that ended up costing them in a big way.

Then in week two Kent State traveled to Arkansas for their SEC school matchup, and this game was close for the first half. It was nice to see Kent State hang in there for a half, the final score may not indicate how close the first half was. Kent State in the last two seasons has played their SEC opponent well. Last year against Georgia it was a closer game than anyone thought. Then this year it was close for half, so it was impressive to see the new-looked Flashes hang in there.

Then finally in week three Kent State got the first win of the season. It was the first win under new head coach Kenni Burns. The game also saw Kent State get their first touchdown of the season. But it was a game that they should have won playing against Central Connecticut State University. But give credit to Kent State, they did get the win. It was a good day for the program.

Then last night Kent State lost to Fresno State 53-10, but in the first four games, there are things to like. McCray, and Gavin Garcia.

This season will be tough for the Flashes, but each game if Kent State shows signs of improvement after the rebuilding year they were forced to have with Sean Lewis and the majority of the team transferring.

If Kent State shows signs of improvement when MAC play begins next week there is some reason to believe that next year they could be back trying to compete for bowl eligibility.
