Monte’s age clearly held no indication as he toed the line Friday afternoon for the 110 meter hurdles preliminary race, qualifying with a time of 14.901 seconds for an upset finish that secured him a fourth place position against junior and senior competitors. Capitalizing on his goal to qualify, Monte headed into the next days battle as a true force to be reckoned with.
“I was very surprised,” Monte commented about his qualifying time. “I didn’t think that I would do as good as I did. I came second in my heat after being placed thirteenth overall, so I didn’t think that I would even make it out of prelims. It was very surprising.”
