St. Rita Mustangs Took Down St. Laurence Vikings 20-9 on Senior Night

St. Rita Mustangs take on the St. Laurence Vikings at home on Senior Night under the lights on a true fall Friday night.

1st Quarter

St. Rita will return the opening kick to their 17-yard line. The Mustangs have a great first drive getting it all the way down to St. Laurence’s 32-yard line but then turn the ball over. The Vikings will respond with their first and only drive of the first quarter. This drive results in a punt after the Vikings cannot move the ball downfield, the Mustangs start their second drive with seven minutes left in the quarter on their own 26-yard line. Running back, Nick Herman plays a huge role in driving the ball downfield. He tallied 44 yards in the second drive alone. The Mustangs will just be short of the endzone but came out with a field goal kicked by Ryan Mottl. St. Rita is up 3-0 with 2:18 left in the quarter. St. Laurence will collect a few first downs to get to their own 46-yard line to end the quarter.

2nd Quarter

The St. Laurence Vikings will start at their own 46-yard line. The Vikings will get across the 50-yard line only to be picked off by James Kingsbury. The Vikings then were flagged for a personal foul allowing the Mustangs to take over at the Vikings’ 33-yard line. Steven Armbruster with a great read, no one open so he ran it down for a gain of 17 yards. Herman ran back-to-back plays first for a gain of 13 yards then a 7-yard touchdown. Mottl with the extra point, St. Rita went up 10-0 with 9:59 left in the half.  The Vikings could not get a first down and were forced to punt. The Mustangs will start from St. Laurence’s 37-yard line. St. Rita only needed two chances before Armbruster threw a 33-yard touchdown to Samuel Gyimah, Mottl’s kick was good. The Mustangs went up 17-0 with 8:36 left in the half. The Vikings got to Rita’s 6-yard line and were picked off in the endzone by Conner Artis. Rita’s offense could not back up the interception and was forced to punt. The Vikings got the ball back at their 4-yard line with 3 seconds left in the half. They will get the first down but will run out of time in the half to produce.

3rd Quarter

The Vikings returned the kick to their 24-yard line. They were able to control the first half of the quarter but being pushed into a 4th& 21 they were forced to punt. The Mustangs began their drive at their own 26-yard line with 7:29 left in the 3rd quarter. They were forced to punt; they were unable to gain any yardage that drive.  The Vikings started from their own 39-yard with 5:12 on the clock. They drove the ball downfield in 2:38 for a Vikings touchdown. Mustangs were still up 17-6 with 2:29 left on the clock. They started at their own 20-yard line. The Mustangs were unable again to get the ball moving and had to punt once again. The Vikings got the ball on their own 45 but with a flag on the Mustangs, they started at the Mustang’s 40-yard line with 34 seconds left in the quarter.

St. Rita was still on top 17-6 going into the final 12 minutes of the game.

4th Quarter

The Vikings started at St. Rita’s 39-yard line. They would get to Rita’s 5-yard line and were unable to score. The Mustang’s defense came in big time to stop the Vikes and hold them to a field goal. The Mustangs were still up 17-9 with 8:41 left in the game. Herman had a 50-yard kick return to put the Mustangs at St. Laurence’s 41-yard line. He had another big first-down rush to get the Mustangs on the 28-yard line. Thomas Bonner picked up the next first down putting the Mustangs within 18 yards of the endzone. Herman drove the ball even closer but was still a yard short of the first. A flag pushed the Mustangs back and they were forced to kick a field goal from the 14-yard line. Mottl’s kick was good. The Mustangs went up 20-9 with 2:19 left in the game. The Vikings would start their final drive from their own 28-yard line. The Mustang defense never let their foot off the pedal. First, they pushed the Vikings back 4 yards to their 28, then Justin Buckner had an interception getting the ball back for St. Rita with 1:58 left on the clock.

St. Rita would finish the game with the ball and win 20-9.

St. Rita will be on the road next week and will be facing Brother Rice.
