St. Edward Eagles Soar To 47-7 Win Over Mentor Cardinals

LAKEWOOD, OHIO – The Madhouse on Madison hosted the biggest game on the early schedule as Mentor visited St. Edward. A ravenous St. Edward defense was just too much to handle for Mentor as the Eagles soared to a 47-7 blowout win over the Cardinals.  Any chance the Cardinals had at keeping it close was damaged severely with the injury to Jacob Snow late into the first half.

It is rumored that Eagle quarterback Christian Ramos is headed to BGSU next Fall for baseball, but this young man has a future as a NCAA quarterback if he chooses so as well.  He had an incredible night, throwing for 241 yards on 16 of 20 passing with a touchdown.  He also ran for 44 yards on 7 attempts with 3 touchdowns.  Ramos is the real deal at quarterback for the Eagles.

Helping Ramos the most is the absolutely plethora of talent he has around him.  Tailback Danny Enovitch ran for 78 yards on 14 carries.  He also caught 3 balls for 34 yards.  Also running the ball well was Marvin Bell with 46 yards and a touchdown on 5 carries.

The receiving core for the Eagles is very deep and everyone got involved once again.  Connor Goodall had 4 catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.  Jackson Miller went for 60 yards on 3 catches himself.  Kyan Mason, Brad Delphia, Rayshawn Manning Jr, Ian Fairfield, Hayden Rice and Joel Castleberry all caught passes as well.

It’s hard to predict what would have happened if Jacob Snow didn’t get hurt.  He was just starting to find his groove before getting knocked out of the game.  Snow threw for 86 yards on 6 of 10 passing with a touchdown before exiting the game.

After forcing a three and out, the Eagles took over near midfield and wasted no time striking.  Ramos hit Danny Enovitch for 10 yards on a screen to get it going.  Moments later, it was Ramos doing it himself as he took a RPO 34 yards to the house, breaking 3 tackles along the way with a beautiful stiff arm.  Just like that, a few minutes into the game, it was 7-0 Eagles.

Mentor, feeling the urgency being down 7-0, went for it on their next drive on a fourth and short.  The gamble paid off as Jacob Snow tossed it to Mitchell Waite who took off through the Eagle defense for 23 yards.  The drive would eventually stall and they were forced to try a 41-yard field goal attempt that fell just short by Joseph Evans.

The Eagles started the second quarter by driving again with all the momentum on their side.  A big fourth down conversion for 18 yards from Ramos to Jackson Miller put them in the redzone at the Mentor 13-yard line. Miller also had a 17 yard catch earlier in the drive.  After a false start moved it back 5 yards, it was Danny Enovitch blasting through the hole down to the Cardinal 4. A few plays later, it was Ramos sneaking it in from 1 yard out, to put the Eagles up 14-0 with 8:38 to go in the first half.

A squib kick for the Eagles would then backfire as Summerfield of Mentor took it back to the Cardinal 41-yard line. Then, on what should have either been a sack or intentional grounding, the officials for some reason called it an incomplete pass.  The miscall sent head coach Tom Lombardo into a frenzy on the sidelines which resulted in a 15-yard penalty.

As the chaos ensued, the Cardinals stayed calm and it was Snow hitting Michael Norwood for 37 yards on the next play which put the Cardinals down to the goal line.  Snow then connected with Jordan Stapleton on the next play to get the Cardinals on the board at 14-7 with 6:37 to go in the first half.

With the clock running inside of 5 minutes in the second quarter, St. Edward went back to work.  After a few strong runs by Danny Enovitch got them moving, Ramos decided to show off his strong baseball arm for a 39-yard launch as he hit Connor Goodall in stride for a touchdown.  An 89-yard drive in less than three minutes extended their lead to 20-7 as the extra point was blocked.

Jacob Snow was missing on the next Mentor possession and they had to plug in their freshman backup quarterback Scotty Fox.  The Cardinals reached midfield but turned it over on downs with 48 seconds left in the half for the Eagles to try and do something with it.

Ramos would then launch a rocket under pressure to Kyan Mason 29 yards down the field.  An Enovitch run later, and it was second and goal from the 2 for the Eagles with 17 ticks of the clock remaining. Ramos, yet again, would take matters into his own hands and scamper in from two yards out to put the Eagles up 27-7 at half.

Scotty Fox would come back out for the second half as the injury to the hand of Snow was too much to comeback from.  Fox would be under pressure early and often as the Eagles came flying in every chance they had.

Already up 27-7, the Eagles wanted more midway through the third quarter as they drove into Cardinal territory.  The drive would be snuffed out however as a bad snap was chased down by Mentor, giving them the ball back at their own 37 with 5:28 to go in the third quarter.

The goodwill wouldn’t last long for the Cardinals however, as after another 3 and out, the Eagles blocked their punt and took over at the 5-yard line.  One play later, it was Danny Enovitch cruising in untouched from 5 yards out to make it 34-7.

The Eagles would go on to score again as Marvin Bell checked in and piled up the yards.  He would actually fumble it at the goal line, but it was picked up inside the endzone by Jackson Miller.  Despite the extra point nailing the upright and missing, it was still 40-7 Eagles and the running clock began.

The Eagles would tack on another one before it was over, finishing the scoring at 47-7 and improving to 3-0 on the season.
