Toledo, OH – To kick off the 2022 high school football season, the Roger Rams hosted the Southview Cougars. The Cougars benefited off of 3 touchdown runs by Isaac Sexton, 2 long touchdown passes to Emite Lamb, 1 touchdown run by both Ben Tucker and Braydon Posner and 1 long touchdown pass to Jordan King. The Cougars had a slow start, but quickly turned the game around.

Both teams have first year head coaches. In the past four years, Southview has seen three head coaches, Steve Hardy being the latest. The Cougars went 4-7 last season, but this season, Southview is returning with players who have the size, experience and speed.

FIRST QUARTER
Southview got off to a rough start after an error on the opening kickoff by fumbling the ball. When the Cougars got the ball back, Isaac Sexton carried Will Mayzes pass for 30 yards before gaining the first score of the game.

A fumble by the Rams, handed the ball back to the Cougars, but Roger’s Ethan Klinger snatched Mayzes pass and took it all the way to the endzone. With the Cougars next possession, they went back to Sexton who completed a 44-yard touchdown to put Southview back in the lead.

SECOND QUARTER
In the second quarter, the Cougars began to find their stride, with Sexton adding another touchdown four yards out. Coach Hardy has good total numbers, including 66 on varsity, with 14 seniors and 33 letterwinners.

This depth allows for a successful two quarterback offense, which allowed Avery Offenburg to get his hands on the ball for a long touchdown pass to Emite Lamb. When the Rams gained possession, Rogers fumbled again and Southview put up another touchdown from Mayzes on a 21-yard pass to Jordan King. Southview led 42-7 going into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER
Going into the second half, a running clock was issued. The Rams tried to fight back forcing a fumble, but Southview’s junior receiver, Lamb, caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Offenburg. The Cougars were relentless on defense, with an interception by Cam Ramm, which led to a 20-yard touchdown run by Ben Tucker.

FOURTH QUARTER
Southview’s special teams had their time to shine in the fourth quarter with Mike Alexander III getting a 40-yard punt return separating themselves from the Rogers by 56 points. With a minute left Brayden Posner completed a 10-yard run to put the Cougars at an incredible 70-7 finish.

Players of the game:
Southview’s RB Isaac Sexton with 3 touchdowns.
Southview’s WR Emite Lamb with 2 touchdown passes.

Rogers will host Lima Senior and Southview will host their second city league matchup against Waite next week on Aug. 26.
