With an unbelievable score of 51-7, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats prove their offensive dominance on the field.
No one saw Saint Ignatius winning the game by this margin. Coming in as the underdogs may have been daunting, but they secured themselves as fierce competitors on a 3rd & goal early on in the 1st quarter.
Quarterback Brogan Jones of Mentor’s pass was intercepted in dramatic fashion: Senior David Hughes III of Ignatius ran the ball all the way down the field to the 30. After this huge play, Ignatius set up junior Jacob Mikin (QB) for a pass to junior Jake Lamirand (WR), who ran it in for a touchdown. With the extra point, Ignatius set the score at 7-0 with 7:05 remaining in the quarter, securing themselves as a real threat.
Ignatius quickly regained possession of the ball after a moment of miscommunication that resulted in a fumbled Mentor first down. Ignatius’ defense recovered the ball, and proceeded to get a touchdown in just a few plays. Mikin passed the ball to junior Billy Cole (WR), who ran it into the endzone. With 5:41 on the clock, the kick was good, setting Ignatius in a clear lead at 14-0.
As Mentor continued to make small mistakes, Ignatius worked hard, getting the score up to 21-0 with a touchdown from Billy Cole and a field goal from Griffin Roberts.
The end of the first quarter showcased the struggling offense of the Mentor Cardinals. After a touchback for the Cardinals, Junior Braylon Callahan (RB) was tackled on first down, losing 1 yard at the 19. On 2nd & 11, James Conrad of Saint Ignatius had an excellent sack. Callahan got 12 yards with a carry on 3rd & 17, but they chose to punt on fourth down.
The second quarter started off with a confident Mikin. Ignatius had several successful rushing and passing plays, besides a 3rd & goal rush by Mikin that was stuffed for a loss of one yard.
After a turnover to Mentor, the Mentor offense seemed to find their stride. Junior Cameron Deitrick (WR) caught some strong passes, and Logan Berwald was starting to make a name for himself in his ability to blast past the defense.
Things got exciting with 6:22 left on the clock.
At the 37 yard line, Ignatius had a quarterback sack, and junior Logan Drummond ran the ball into the end zone for a pick-six! With the extra point from Griffin Roberts, the score was now 28-0.
The momentum kept going into the end of the first half, with a touchdown by Billy Cole.
But 35-0 wasn’t enough for Saint Ignatius – they wanted senior Trey Haddad to have his moment. With 2:33 remaining, the score was 41-0.
The game got even more wild.
With 17.3 seconds remaining, Haddad got another touchdown! The energy at the game was electric – no one saw that coming!
Coming out of the high-scoring first half for Saint Ignatius, the second half started slower.
Mentor was making some strong plays, showcasing the offensive talents of Berwald, Deitrick, and Callahan.
Their hard work was rewarded when Mentor got their first touchdown: Callahan ran the ball 9 yards into the endzone, setting the score at 48-7 with 1:14 left in the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter started with a long string of well-executed rushing plays involving sophomore Tyler McMillon (RB) of Ignatius. Ignatius eventually punted for a field goal, and got the score up to a staggering 51-7.
Ignatius heads home with their heads held high, ready to take on the Walsh Jesuit Warriors.
