Despite a mostly rainy and chilly week in Northeast, Ohio, the weather was perfect for this Friday Night Lights matchup in Bay Village — as the (3-1) Bay Rockets entertained the (3-2) Rocky River Pirates.
Both teams, coming off of wins in their last games, looked to continue their momentum this week — especially since the Rockets and Pirates face off in a school rivalry.
First Half
This rivalry, capped off with full stands and loud fans, did not start off on the right track for the home-team Rockets. A three and out followed by an ugly punt gave the Pirates a great look just within enemy waters.
Off the legs of the Bebie Bro’s, Tommy (number 44 this game) and Johnny lead the Pirates down the field in just four plays. It was T. Bebie who finished off the drive, as he rushed in an eight yard touchdown. Already midway through the first quarter, the Pirates are up 7-0.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, they followed the Pirates score with another three and out. Still without having thrown a pass, the away team drove down the field again. A collection of rushes by T. Bebie finished with a 22 yard touchdown rush that brought the Pirates lead up to two scores — 14-0.
The next drive ended much better for the Bay High Rockets. A rush attempt by FB Jack McCleary was fumbled, yet recovered by RB Pawie Ault for a 41 yard touchdown. After outrunning every Pirate and throwing up the peace sign like Tyreke Hill, Ault’s score and subsequent extra point brought the Rockets closer — 14-7.
A 34 yard kick return by Braedon Spies set the Pirates up in enemy waters again to start their next drive. Still without having to throw a pass, the Pirates drove 40 yards to score again. This time, J. Bebie ran in a three yard touchdown — however, the extra point was no good, bringing their lead to 20-7.
At the end of the first quarter, 20-7 remained the Pirates lead.
An unfortunate three and out — followed by a fumbled punt by the Rockets — set the Pirates up yet again in enemy territory. This drive for the visitors started in the red zone and ended in the endzone — as another rush (12 yards) from J. Bebie extended the Pirates’ dominance. Having missed their previous extra point, B. Spies rushed in a two point conversion — bringing the Rocky River Pirates lead to 28-7.
The Rockets could not catch a break. On their next drive, another three and out gave the Pirates the ball back.
You can guess what happened next.
Still, with the arm talent of Braedon Spies not being utilized yet, the Pirates relied again on the Bebie Bro’s. It was Tommy who got the 21 yard touchdown rush though, for his third touchdown of the game.
While that may be a hat trick so far for Tommy, this reporter has a feeling it won’t be his last touchdown of the game.
With that score and another missed extra point, the Pirates swashbuckled their way to an even more dominating lead midway through the second quarter — 34-7.
A field goal from Rockets K Cooper Mendelow tacked on three more for them before halftime, bringing the score to 34-10.
Though they only had 55 seconds to do so, the Pirates drove the field again on their next drive. After a lengthy penalty, T. Bebie and the away team were backed 50 yards away from paydirt. No worries for T. Bebie, though, as he rushed that length for a touchdown – extending the visiting Pirates lead to 41-10 going into halftime.
Second Half
Not only did the Bebie Bro’s have a combined six touchdowns, but talented QB B. Spies did not throw a pass in the first half.
Out of the first half, the Pirates received the kickoff. They looked to continue their ravenous plunder in the second half.
After Tommy Bebie’s 247 yard, four touchdown first half, Johnny got the majority of the rushes this half, along with some other supporting rushers.
A missed 46 yard field goal attempt shut the drive down short for the Pirates, ending the third quarter on a rough note for the otherwise successful night.
This set the Rockets up to at least attempt to drive the field and cut into the blowout they found themselves on the wrong side of. Unfortunately for them, they could not.
An attempt to drive the field and tack on more points from the Pirates B team lasted almost the entire length of the fourth quarter but did not amount to any.
This game was another dominating performance for the Rocky River Pirates. Next week, they are home against (1-4) Fairview. As for the Rockets, they will try to gain momentum back next week against (4-1) North Olmsted.
