Rocky River Rolls Past Harvey 10-0 in Rain-Shortened Sectional Final
The Rocky River Pirates softball punched its ticket to the next round of the postseason Saturday morning after defeating Harvey Red Raiders softball 10-0 in a rain-shortened sectional final.
Rocky River came out strong from the very beginning behind dominant pitching from junior Reagan Kane (#21), who controlled the game inside the circle all afternoon. Kane struck out multiple Harvey batters early and allowed very little offensive momentum throughout the matchup.
Harvey’s Milli Padron (#1) opened the game with a hit for the Red Raiders, but Rocky River quickly shut the inning down after Addie Dietrich (#14) made the play at first base. Kane followed with back-to-back strikeouts against Samantha Boykin (#20) and Payton Robertson (#7) to end the top half of the first inning.
Harvey pitcher Samantha Boykin (#20) answered with two strikeouts of her own to begin the bottom half of the inning, retiring Maddie Sollars (#13) and Ava Mae DeMooy (#4). However, the biggest moment of the inning came when Kane stepped up to the plate and crushed a solo home run deep over the outfield fence to give Rocky River an early 1-0 lead and spark the Pirates’ offense.
Rylie Quaiser (#17) later worked a walk before Elizabeth Smalley (#1) singled to center field to keep the inning alive. Smalley then stole second base before Harvey recorded the final out of the inning. Rocky River held a 1-0 advantage after one.
Harvey threatened briefly in the second inning after Vicky Lopez Soto (#10) singled to center field and later advanced to second. Padron also put the ball in play, but Dietrich once again made the defensive stop at first base for Rocky River. Kane closed the inning with another strikeout to keep Harvey scoreless.
The Pirates’ offense exploded in the bottom of the second inning.
Genevieve Voight (#7) led off before Dietrich (#14) reached base after battling through several tough pitches. Carly Ewing (#12) followed with a hit, and Sollars (#13) drove in Rocky River’s second run with a shot to center field.
DeMooy (#4) added another RBI during the inning, while Gretchen Stalzer (#19) worked a walk to load more traffic onto the bases. Quaiser (#17) came through with another big hit that brought home two more runs, extending the lead to 5-0.
Elleana Biscardi (#6) later singled to center field to load the bases once again before Harvey right fielder Chloe Boehm (#14) made a running catch to end the inning.
Rocky River’s defense and pitching continued to dominate in the third inning. Kane struck out Kim Aguayo (#21), while Biscardi (#6) and Sophie Turner (#9) helped track down fly balls in the outfield.
The Pirates added two more runs in the top of the third after Ewing (#12) reached base and later scored. Sollars (#13) also crossed home plate during the rally, pushing Rocky River’s lead to 7-0.
Harvey attempted to respond in the bottom half of the inning when Robertson (#7) reached first base on a hit, but Kane remained locked in. The Rocky River junior struck out multiple batters once again and continued her impressive performance in the circle.
In the fourth inning, Rocky River loaded the bases after Biscardi (#6), Voight (#7), and Stalzer (#19) all reached safely. Although Harvey escaped the inning without allowing a run, the pressure from the Pirates continued to build.
Harvey’s best chance came in the bottom of the fourth when Boehm (#14) reached base on a single. Boykin (#20) and Melissa Lopez Rodriguez (#13) also battled at the plate, but Rocky River’s defense stayed sharp and prevented the Red Raiders from getting on the scoreboard.
As rain began pouring down later in the game, Rocky River added three more runs to extend the lead to 10-0 before officials eventually called the game due to weather conditions.
Kane finished with a standout performance both pitching and hitting, including the early solo home run that helped set the tone for Rocky River’s sectional championship victory.
With the win, Rocky River advances in postseason play and continues its strong playoff run.
