Rocky River Advances To State Championship Game in Thrilling Win Over Bay Village

The Pirates had a chance to get on the board early as senior Ava Patti tried to put the Pirates up but her shot sailed left of the goal post.

After a Pirate foul, the Rockets were awarded a free kick from 33 yards away and that failed. On the next Pirate possession, they were awarded a corner. This corner was saved as senior goalkeeper Katie Mold who saved a header from going in. The Pirates were awarded yet another corner. This time a header was blocked before getting to the goal. The Pirates were awarded another free kick on their next possession and this time it was only 21 yards away.

The kick was blocked though by the Rockets wall. After an offsides call on the Pirates, the Rockets were awarded a free kick, and this was saved by junior goalkeeper Caitlin Rose. After a Rockets foul, the Pirates were awarded another free kick, and this was also saved by Rose. After a couple of shots on goal by junior Sophia Sindelar which were saved by Mold, we headed to halftime with the score tied at 0 to 0. The Pirates had 13 total shots but only 6 were on target and the Rockets had 4 shot but only 1 was on goal during the first half.

The second half started with the Rockets committing an offsides. The Rockets regained control as they drew a foul against the Pirates. This resulted in a free kick for the Rockets from 26 yards out. This attempt was saved by Rose for the Pirates once again. Bay then tried to convert on a corner, but the attempt was deflected by Rose for the Pirates and the Rockets got another corner out of it.

This time, the Rockets could not capitalize as the corner sailed out of bounds. The Pirates then struck first when senior Ava Patti found Sindelar who connected with the back of the net for her 59th goal of the year and this was Patti`s 38th assist on the year to put the Pirates up 1 to 0 in the 50th minute. Then in the 68th minute, the Rockets was awarded a corner and after a handball penalty by the Pirates, they were awarded a penalty shot. Junior Tessa Knapp took the penalty shot and connected for her 58th goal on the year to tie the game at 1.

The Pirates tried to retake the lead but a shot by Patti sailed once again over the top bar. The Pirates were then awarded a corner and Patti tried to connect again but the shot sailed just right of the post. In the final minute of regulation, Patti tried to take the lead, but Mold made a miraculous save to keep it tied and to send the game into overtime.

After two overtimes, the match remained tied, and we headed to the penalty shootout, the Rockets shot first but their first attempt by Knapp was saved by Rose. The Pirates then had their first opportunity as Patti scored to put the pressure on the Rockets. On the second shot by the Rockets, junior Emery Aschenbrener scored to keep the season alive. The Pirates found the back of the net on their second attempt when Sindelar scored.

The Rockets third shot by junior Maddy Jalovec was saved by Rose. The Pirates connected on their third shot when senior Mackenzie Russell scored. On a must needed score by the Rockets, Elise Papp scored the season saving goal. The game ended when sophomore Addison Russell secured a championship bid for the Pirates when she scored.

The players of the game are Caitlin Rose for the Pirates as she had two big saves during the penalty kick round and for the Rockets is Tessa Knapp as she had the only tally of the game for her squad.

The Rockets season comes to a bitter end while the Pirates move on to the Division Two State Championship against Cincinnati Summit Country Day in Columbus at Historic Crew Stadium on Friday afternoon.
