OHSAA Baseball State Championship Preview: Warren JFK Eagles

The Warren JFK athletic programs have had a lot of success over the course of the year. The football team advanced to the  Division VII state championship game this past November, the basketball team won a district title for the third time in five years and advanced to the Division IV Regional Championship game in March.

Now it’s the baseball team’s turn to try and bring home the gold.

The Eagles’ road to Akron started with a win over Lowellville in the sectional championship. In the Struthers District, they defeated David Anderson, and Heartland Christian, respectively, to advance.

The Eagles’ success continued in the regionals at Strongsville. In the semifinal, they defeated Columbia, 10-2, thanks to a six-run inning.

In the final, they defeated Tiffin Calvert, 7-2, to capture their first regional championship in baseball in school history.

The Eagles have an 11-man roster that includes six freshmen and seven underclassmen in total. Upperclassmen include junior Gavin Shrum, who pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief last Saturday, and senior Cam Hollobaugh, whose home run also aided the winning effort.

Notable in-season wins:

April 16th: 5-2 over Gilmour Academy

April 26th: 3-0 over Rootstown

May 21st: 6-0 over Cardinal Mooney

In the Eagles’ past eleven games, they have put up an average of 10.5 runs per game. It’s safe to say that their offense has played a huge role in their success as of late.

The Eagles go into Saturday’s contest with a 20-9 record. They will play against Fort Loramie Division IV State Semifinal Saturday afternoon. The winner will advance to the State Championship Sunday afternoon.
