Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker defeat Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes to win the Dusty Cup.
Carmelo Hayes taking the spear from Bron Breakker so Trick Williams would be fresh for his NXT World Title Match later in the evening was a nice touch. Williams then inviting Carmelo Hayes to be at ringside further teased something would happen between the two later on. As for the match, it was rock solid and a fun one to watch as despite how much fans seem to hate Corbin, he continues to put together entertaining matches.
With Bron on his way to RAW, this was a great way to go out, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he bounced between brands for a bit longer as well. I also wouldn’t be shocked if he continues to team with Baron Corbin on any of the brands as well.
Dijak defeated Joe Gacy by Pinfall in a hardcore match
While I thought this may have been a clunker, it turned out to be one of the best matches of the night. Gacy, is starting to have a Mankind aura about him that he may not look like much, but he can take an absolute beating and the fans are going to pull for him.
To his credit, Dijak is starting to use his athleticism a bit more each time out, and had a tremendous round kick on the outside during this match as well. My favorite spot was the splash through the table as it was covered with lego’s and little toy cars. Anyone who has ever stepped on either, realizes the pain those can bring you.
The DeAngelo Family defeats OTM
Adding the two women of each faction gave this a fun element to it. Adrianna Rizzo leaping from the top rope to crash down on OTM was certainly a high spot. This match did two things, the long portion of dominance and commentary of Wade Barrett did a lot to get OTM over, and then the housecleaning and victory brought on by Tony DeAngelo made him look even stronger.
This is not the end for OTM, but only the beginning, as I believe this match sets them up perfectly for a rematch, and a long title run. Vic Joseph had a great line during this match, knocking former member 2 Dimes. It was subtle, but if you were listening you heard him knock the current AEW/ROH member.
Lyla Valkyria retained her NXT Women’s Championship over Roxanne Perez and Lola Vice
This was awfully overbooked. There was no reason for Lola Vice to cash in her title shot during this match that didn’t need the overbooking. Perez continues to look weak and an after thought, and at the same time Vice just had all her steam put out in one night. Bad decisions all the way around here.
Oba Femi defeats Dragon Lee to retain the NXT North American Championship
Unlike NXT giants of the past, Dabba Kato and Omos, this big man can really move. Femi has not only the obvious size, but the agility and power to make a difference. NXT creative seems to have a purpose at hand here, and it will be interesting to see just how far they take the Femi storyline until someone gets the better of him.
Ilja Dragunov retains the NXT World Championship over Trick Williams
Well, we knew the match would deliver but what we didn’t know is when Carmelo Hayes would turn against Williams, it took most of the night, but it finally occurred post-match following the Dragunov victory.
Here’s the thing folks, people may think I’m crazy here, but these two are desperately trying to recreate the Diesel Shawn Michaels dynamic of many years ago. The difference being both had countless singles titles and tag titles by that point. Really, with this duo, the only one who has achieved anything is Hayes at this point. Still, that being said, a breakup is a breakup and even though this storyline has completely overshadowed any other angle they have been in the past 4 months, it warrants attention.
One of these two, not sure who yet, will be called up to the WWE main roster during the next WWE Draft in May.
Overall, a solid PLE, with NXT continuing to put on great PPV type shows. I look forward to another outstanding NXT Stand and Deliver to come.
