The action started off quick in Brunswick as the Mentor Cardinals took the ball all the way to the Brunswick four-yard line on a kickoff return. Scotty Fox completed the one play drive with a short pass to the goal line to Henry Schenk to get a quick 7-0 lead over the home team.
You would expect Brunswick to be taken back after giving up the touchdown and the big return, but not these Blue Devils. It took only two plays for Ethan Roksandich to connect with Matthew Horton for 55 yards. The extra point was no good as Mentor retained the lead 14-6.
Mentor put together a solid drive led by the passing attack from Fox and company. Fox was able to get his offensive unit at that goal line for a four-yard pass to running back Mitchell Waite to increase the lead.
Brunswick struggled to get anything going on back-to-back possession. It took another pick to put fuel into the tank for the Brunswick offense. Roksandich used his feet with his running back John Crawford to get down the field for a touchdown and convert on a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14
Mentor had around two minutes at the end of the half to get the ball into the endzone preventing Brunswick from scoring after getting the ball to start the second half. Fox once again led his team down the field using short slant routes and out routes to get underneath the zone coverage of the Blue Devils. The Cardinals scored with just a minute left in the half 21-14.
The second half was a downward spiral for the Blue Devils allowed the Cardinals to run away with the game. After a three and out Fox connected with Jacob Snow to run away with the game game. Mentor gave up two picks in this game but still put up a strong performance maximizing on their opportunities thanks to Scotty Fox and his receivers to take home the victory 35-14 to get their first GCC win.
Our Back Attack Snacks player of the game was Jacob Snow for the Mentor Cardinals, he played QB/RB/WR and touched the ball every chance they got. Snow also got a touchdown that sealed the game for the Cardinals.
We will see the Mentor Cardinals facing off against the Medina Battling Bees next week and see Brunswick at home once again in week nine.
