Loras College Duhawks Swept #14 Cornell College (25-20, 25-23, 26-24)

The Loras College Duhawks Women Volleyball SWEPT nationally ranked #14 Cornell College in three sets at the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center on Wednesday night. Loras was 6-6 going into the game and Cornell was 8-1.

SET 1

Cornell serves first then Autumn Finch gets the first kill of the night tying it at 1’s. Gina DeVoe came in to serve for the Duhawks and put up a few points with an ace. The Duhawks capitalized on the Ram’s errors and got up 6-2. Cornell comes back with a rally of their own to tie it 6-6. This set got heated, the Duhawks and Rams were battling for every point continuously tied. Cat Meyer came in to serve being tired at 12-12 and she put the Duhwaks up 16-12 with 2 kills from her teammates and two of her own aces.  Patrycja Jarzabek with a kill then Finch with a solo block. Then Finch came up with back-to-back kills to increase the Duhawk lead from 20 to 14. Sara Hoskins with multiple assists the whole set gets her own set of back-to-back blocks with some help from her teammates Elaina Schroder and Finch, Duhawks are up 22-15. The Cornell Rams were on their first big run of the set putting them within two of the Duhawks. Schroder had a momentum-changing kill. Allows Hoskins to finish up the game with an assist to Schroeder once again then an ace to win the game. Duhawks won the first set 25-20.

SET 2

Loras began the game with the serve Meyers set the tone with an opening ace. Finch had shared blocks with Hoskins and Alexis Woltman as well as a kill. Duhawks were up 4-1. They continued to grow their lead with Iva Senio at the line. The Duhawks’ strong offense forces multiple Ram errors. The Duahwks created a nice cushion for themselves, they led 7-2. The Cornell Rams jumped on a few Duhawk mishaps to tie the game at 7s. The teams were going back and forth and just when the Rams thought they had a lead the Duhawks came back every single time from being down or tied to getting up by one. This game was a boxing match, neither team was going down. Tied at 23, Jarzabek with a kill and DeVoe into to serve and the Duhawks win on a Rams attack error. The Duhawks won 25-23.

SET 3

Finch started the game with an opening kill. Then Duhawks get the serve and take advantage of multiple Rams errors. Sophie Younkin and Schroeder each had a kill as well during the back and forth, Duhawks were up 5-2. The Rams fought back to make it even at 5 and once again this set is neck and neck, the Rams are fighting to get to a fourth set meanwhile the Duhawks are trying to slam the door. DeVoe came in to serve tied at 8 and with some help from Jarzabeck, who had two kills. Cornell came back and was able to push themselves ahead 15-12. The Duhawks fought their way to tie it 19-19. Finch, Meyer, and Younkin all with clutch kills to keep moving the game on with Senio at the line. Finch was the last server of the game and once again the Duhawks won on a Ram error. The Duhawks won 26-24.

Patrycja Jarzabek led the Duhawks with 13 kills and Sophie Younkin had 10 for herself alongside 9 digs. Autumn Finch had 8 kills with 7 blocks. Sara Hoskins tallied 36 assists, 6 blocks, and 16 digs in the sweep.

This was a huge win for the Duhawks! They are currently 7-8 and will take on the crosstown rival, the University of Dubuque, on Wednesday, September 27th.
