Parma Heights, OH- Lakewood opens up GLC East play with a big 50-30 victory over Holy Name behind 37 combined points from Charleigh Doxley, Delaney Garcia, and Layla Smith.
The Rangers started off hot in the first with Smith burying a few put backs off the rim to give Lakewood a 6-0 lead from the get-go. Holy Name coach Petitti called a timeout following this to regroup. This worked initially as Nalani Simon and Honesti Williams both scored a bucket to make it 6-4. However, coach Work of the Rangers got her team firing on all cylinders to end the first as Lakewood went on a 13-0 run to lead 19-4 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter brought more of the same for the Rangers as Layla Smith went into double figures early on. Garcia began to make her impact on the game in the second as she got up to 13 points by the half. 5 of these points came from the free throw line. Overall, Lakewood would go 12/17 from the line. Holy Name would get outscored 17-6 in this quarter as their points came from Simon along with Claire Coljohn and Layla Rudolph. As Smith and Garcia combined for 25 first half points, the Rangers went to the locker room up 36-10.
The second half saw Holy Name play tougher as they would only lose the quarter overall by 5. This may have been since Smith didn’t check in again until the fourth quarter. Garcia would add a field goal to her tally which brought her total up to 15 points. Holy Name would hit their first triple of the afternoon via Emmalee Majoros. Going into the fourth, Lakewood led 50-19.
The story of the fourth quarter was Holy Name’s defense. After allowing 50 points in the first three quarters, the Green Wave proceeded to allow 0 points to the Rangers in the final frame. Holy Name posted 11 points behind a two from Rudolph along with threes from Noemi Cartagena and Natalie Stibley with the former posting 2 of the 3. This effort was not enough in the end to make a comeback as Holy Name would drop to 3-2, losing 50-30.
Lakewood had a demanding start to the season with losses to Medina, Elyria Catholic, and Brunswick. Their only win prior came against Bay. Holy Name started the year with big wins against St Martin De Porres, Cleveland Central Catholic, and Horizon Science Academy. The schedule gets tougher as they take on Buckeye, Normandy, Padua, and Lakewood in December, all of which they lost last season. Brooklyn is the other opponent they take on. The Hurricanes started the season 1-2 but went 15-8 last season. For the Rangers, they take on Keystone, Mentor, and Avon in December. They also see Valley Forge and Wadsworth. The Rangers did the season double over the Patriots last year but lost to Wadsworth. Lakewood goes into a week break while Holy Name is back on the court Wednesday.
