AVON LAKE – On Monday night the Avon Lake Shoregals hung around with the #2 ranked Westlake Lady Demons to almost sneak out a big road victory. Tonight, they used the momentum that they started Monday to secure a monster 40-25 over the Lady Demons. It was by far their biggest win of the season and it will be interesting to see where this win takes them.
It was a total team effort for the Shoregals as they got the job done and made it look easy at times. Kiley Boutin and Emma Knick each had 8 points while Cory Kroneker led them with 10. I’ve long said that Kroneker is one of the better rebounders in the conference, now she is showing you that she can score too. Courtney Borland, Emily Yarham and Marissa Summerfield had 4 each while Meagan McGinty chipped in with 2.
At first, it looked like it was going to be another long night for the Shoregals offense, as they only scored 2 points in the opening 5 minutes. It was on an Emma Knick steal and fast break, other than that they couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net. Luckily for the Shoregals, the Demons couldn’t score either and they only trailed 4-2.
A Cory Kroneker three ball would put Avon Lake ahead 5-4, then with a little over a minute to go, it was a powerful move inside by Kiley Boutin to increase their lead to 7-4. The Demons would close out the quarter with only their second field goal of the game as Gigi Redinger scored to make it 7-6 after one.
The Shoregals would start the second quarter on a 4-0 run with layups by McGinty and Borland to give them their biggest lead of the game at 11-6. Demon buckets by Redinger and Taylor Gregory would cut the lead back down to 1 at 11-10. Avon Lake would then rattle off 6 straight with 4 from Kroneker and 2 from Boutin to extend the lead back out to 7 at 17-10. The Shoregals would take a 17-12 lead into the break.
Both teams would start the third quarter ice cold as neither quad scored until 5 minutes remained when Morgan Kress hit a long jumper to cut the Shoregal lead to 17-14. Morgan Kress would then rebound a Salem missed three ball, and put it back to cut the lead to 1 at 17-16.
With 3:30 remaining in the quarter Avon Lake still hadn’t scored. From there a couple of Marissa Summerfield free throws would finally awake the Shoregal offense from it’s slumber and increase their lead to 19-16.
The Shoregals finished the quarter scoring 11 more without giving up any, and taking a commanding 30-16 lead into the fourth. The Lady Demons were lacking spark, while the Shoregals kept bringing the energy, fighting for every loose ball.
A brief spark to start the fourth quarter by Whitesell and Gardner cut it back down to 30-19, but the Shoregals weren’t in any danger of blowing the game as this time it was a Demon rally that was cut short. The Shoregals would go on to win with ease 40-25. Successfully avenging their loss from earlier this week.
The Shoregals next play Saturday afternoon in North Ridgeville.
